Igneous Rock Identification
Now that we have some of the basics down, we can start putting names to our igneous rocks. Below
you will see a classification chart for some of the most common igneous rocks. You will use this chart to
identify some mystery rocks. Igneous rocks are classified based on composition (columns) and texture
(rows). For example, an igneous rock that is mafic in composition with a fine-grained aphanitic texture
would be called a basalt.

9. The texture of an igneous rock relates to the size of the minerals within the rock. The table
below summarizes some of the key textures that you will find in igneous rocks. So far, we have
seen rocks with aphanitic, phaneritic and glassy textures. Igneous rocks can also be pyroclastic
or have a vesicular texture. Rocks with a vesicular texture have holes in them that were once
gas bubbles in lava. The term pyroclastic refers to material that has been ejected from a
volcano during an explosive eruption.
The texture of the rock gives clues to the location of formation of the rock. Extrusive rocks form
above the surface and Intrusive rocks form below the surface. The last column has been left
mostly blank. Fill in the remaining cells.
Description

Location of Formation
(Extrusive or Intrusive)
Very small minerals (can't be seen with
the naked eye)
Aphanitic
Contains larger minerals of a similar
size (can be seen with the naked eye)
Mixed size (small and large)

Below, and later at Earth's surface
(intrusive and later extrusive)
No individually visible crystals
Glassy
Very small and contains gas bubbles
Vesicular
Contains ash fragments rather than
minerals
