1.2 Decimals and Negative Numbers A standard package of paper contains 500 sheets. How many packages of paper would Mrs. Kubrick need to show one billion stars? Realistically, can Mrs. Kubrick show one billion stars? 1.2 Decimals and Negative Numbers Class Activity 1E: Representing Decimals with Bundled Objects 1. It is not a strange idea to use 1 object to represent an amount less than 1. After all, 1 penny stands for $0.01, or one hundredth of a dollar. Let's make 1 paperclip stand for 0.001, or one thousandth. Show simple drawings of bundled paperclips so that the way of organizing the paperclips corresponds to the way we write the following decimals: 0.034 0.134 0.13 2. Let's let 1 small bead stand for 0.0001, or one ten-thousandth. Show simple drawings of bundled beads so that the way of organizing the beads corresponds to the way we write the following decimals: 0.0028 0.012 3. List at least three different decimals that the toothpicks pictured here could represent. In each case, state the value of the single toothpick.
Continuous Probability Distributions
Probability distributions are of two types, which are continuous probability distributions and discrete probability distributions. A continuous probability distribution contains an infinite number of values. For example, if time is infinite: you could count from 0 to a trillion seconds, billion seconds, so on indefinitely. A discrete probability distribution consists of only a countable set of possible values.
Normal Distribution
Suppose we had to design a bathroom weighing scale, how would we decide what should be the range of the weighing machine? Would we take the highest recorded human weight in history and use that as the upper limit for our weighing scale? This may not be a great idea as the sensitivity of the scale would get reduced if the range is too large. At the same time, if we keep the upper limit too low, it may not be usable for a large percentage of the population!
