Obtain CSF for gram stain, protein, glucose, cell count & aerobic culture where able. Obtain kit 922257-20G needle/ 922258-22G needle from Hospital Stores. The kit should contain 4 pre-numbered tubes that should be filled in chronological order. Avoid covering up the tube numbers with stickers/covers to ensure the appropriate routing of samples.

  • With low-volume, one-tube specimens not all testing will be possible & the clinician must determine which tests should be prioritized in the case. If cultures were desired, Microbiology should receive the specimen first to ensure the culturing of a sterile specimen.
  • Transport time is 15 minutes.  Don't refrigerate the CSF for bacterial culture.
