Transcribed Image Text:Bicarbonate (HCO3) also moves through the CFTR protein into the fluid lining the airway. People with CF
cannot move HCO3 as effectively, which causes the pH of the fluid lining the airway to become more acidic. A
lower pH of the airway fluid has been shown to impact the ability of immune cells to function properly and may
explain why people with CF have high rates of bacterial infections. This relationship between HCO3, pH, and
infection is still being investigated and is not totally understood or agreed upon by scientists.
