Each cycle of fatty acid oxidation in cellular mitochondria begins with the catalysis of an enzyme group called acyl-CoA dehydrogenases (ACADs). They work by forming a trans-double bond between the C2 and C3 of the acyl-CoA thioester substrate. The enzyme needs an active site glutamate to work effectively, but it also needs flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) to work.
