COULOMB’S LAW
Introduction
Electrostatics, or electricity at rest, involves electric charges, the forces between them, and
their behaviour in materials. The relationship among electrical force, charges, and distance
Coulomb's law – was discovered by the French physicist Charles Coulomb in the eighteenth
century. Coulomb’s law is like Newton's law of gravity. But unlike gravity, electric forces
can be attractive or repulsive.

Learning objectives
Relate the electrostatic force magnitude to the charges and the distance between them
Practical activities
1. Identify two ways you can change the amount of electrostatic force that the charges
experience.
2. How could you increase electrostatic force using each factor? How could you decrease
electrostatic force using each factor?
3. Select two different values for charge 1 and charge 2. How does the force that the smaller
charge exerts on the larger charge compare to the force that the larger charge exerts on the
smaller charge?
4. Explain the difference between attractive and repulsive forces.
5. On the Atomic Scale Screen, measure the electrostatic force in a Hydrogen atom. (Hint:
use a radius of 53 picometres).
6. Pick an independent variable to manipulate and design an experiment to determine what
happens to the electrostatic force as this variable is changed. What do you observe?
