GCC Telecom Companies:
The Need for Efficiency
Boston Consulting Group (BCG), a well-known consulting
firm, emphasized that GCC telecommunication com-
panies need to change their mindset, not just from striv-
ing to achieve a higher degree of growth, but also a high
degree of efficiency.
Competitive pressures necessitate that these com-
panies implement mechanisms that improve their opera-
tional performance.
Joerg Hildebrandt, managing director at BCG Middle
East indicated that "Telecommunications is still one of
the most inefficient industries, with as much as 30% of
its cost basis eaten up by waste. This waste is difficult to
see because it is embedded in telecom processes."
Inefficiency areas were identified in product defects,
over production, inventory, and over-processing. Experts
advised that telecom companies needed to look for more
innovative ways to streamline their operations and cut
costs.
Moreover, the human element was emphasized in
the drive towards efficiency. The BCG report indicated
that employees should be involved in the efforts to
increase efficiency. Improvement efforts are more likely
to succeed if employees are involved and become com-
mitted to such initiatives.
