Transcribed Image Text:Understanding Proportions
A proportion is made when you
have two ratios describing the
same objects.
For example:
Jack drives a large dump truck
in Northern Saskatchewan. His
CAT
truck is taller than his high school
and can haul up to 360 tonnes
of rock. He took a picture of his
dump truck next to his SUV. His
SUV is about 2m tall. How tall is
the dump truck?
Solution: The two dimensions that you are comparing are:
Height of truck: Height of SUV
Remember that we can write a ratio as a fraction
height of truck
height of SUV
We have two different versions of this ratio – one is in the picture, and one is in
real life. We can write these ratios as a proportion:
height of truck in picture _ height of truck in"real life"
height of SUV in"real life"
height of SUV in picture
We can then put in the numbers that we know and then solve for the unknown.
