Question

1) The magnitude and sense of the Moment caused by a Couple in 2D space depends upon________.

a. The magnitude of the two forces.

b. The perpendicular distance between the two forces.

c. The Right-Hand Rule.

d. Can vary depending upon the choice of the origin of the coordinate axes.

e. Answers a, b, and c.

f. All of the above.

2)  True or False: Equivalent Couples can impart the same Moment (or rotation) to a rigid body if and only if the two Equivalent Couples lie in parallel planes or they both lie in the same plane.

Expert Solution
Step 1

1)

Couple - A pair of equal, unlike parallel forces forms a couple. Its only effect on the body is to produce rotation in it. It is vector quantity.

Mechanical Engineering homework question answer, step 1, image 1

For the given force system,

Couple value is equal to the product of one of the forces and perpendicular distance separating them. Its direction of rotation is given by right hand thumb rule.

Couple moment depends only on the perpendicular distance separating the forces. Moments due to couples can be added together following the vector rules.

A couple can be replaced at any other position in its plane without changing its effect that is , it is a free vector. Hence, the couple vector is independent of the choice of the origin of the coordinate axes.

So from above discussion,

Option a, b, c is correct d is incorrect.

Correct option (e) - Answers (a), (b), (c)
