1) Describe what happens to a cell in a hypertonic solution. 2) Describe what happens to a cell in a hypotonic solution. 3) Describe what happens to a cell in an isotonic solution. 4) If a cell has an osmotic pressure of 0.9% what will happen to a cell when placed in each solution * 0.2 % solution * 0.4 % solution * 0.9 % solution * 9.0 % solution

Question
I need help with the review questions and the formula is %change= change in volume (ml) / original volume (ml) x 100
Procedure
1) Place water in a graduated cylinder and measure the
volume in mL (This will be your initial volume of water)
2) Drop potato section into the graduated cylinder (This
will be your final volume of water)
3) Calculate the volume of potato using the formula below.
Volume of Potato = [Final volume of water (mL)] - [Initial
volume of water (mL)]
***Remember to express your units!
Example: 180mL
150mL = 30mL

Review Questions that will be included in your lab report
are below.
1) Describe what happens to a cell in a hypertonic solution.
2) Describe what happens to a cell in a hypotonic solution.
3) Describe what happens to a cell in an isotonic solution.
4) If a cell has an osmotic pressure of 0.9% what will
happen to a cell when placed in each solution
* 0.2 % solution
* 0.4 % solution
* 0.9 % solution
* 9.0 % solution

Expert Solution
Step 1

1) When the cell is put in hypertonic solution, the concentration of solutes in the solution is greater than the concentration of solutes in the cell, causing the cell to have reduced volume owing to the flow of water out of the cell.

2) When the cell is placed in hypotonic solution, the solute concentration outside the cell is smaller than the solute concentration inside the cell, causing the cell to acquire volume owing to water inflow.

3) When the cell is placed in isotonic solution, the solute concentration outside the cell equals the solute concentration inside the cell, resulting in no inflow or outflow of water and a steady volume in the cell.
