Coaxial cable, invented by the mathematician Oliver Heaviside
in the late 1800's, is commonly used in broadband internet
networks and to carry cable television signals. It consists of an
inner conductor surrounded by a layer of insulation, surrounded
by an outer conducting "shield", surrounded by an outer
insulating sheath, as shown in the figure below. In this scenario,
the inner conductor carries current I₁ = 1.5 A into the page, the
outer conductor carries current l2 = 3.75 A out of the page,
the distance d is 1.5 mm. Determine the magnitude and
direction of the magnetic field at the points A and B.
101
Hint: Use Ampere's law: J
closed path will be circular with radius equal to the distance
from the center of the coaxial cable to the point at which you
wish to determine the magnetic field.
