Helicobacter pylori requires 4 steps to colonize the host stomach:

  1. Survival in acidic environment of stomach: here the bacteria neutralises acidic environment via urease activity
  2. Using flagella to move towards epithelial cells 
  3. Using adhesins to attach to host cells: this is necessary for colonization and persistence of infection
  4. Releasing toxin and hence causing tissue damage: example of some toxins release by helicobacter are Vacoulating cytotoxin A. In response chemokines are released by gastric epithelium that leads to gastritis and ulcer.
