Soloman Asch conducted a series of highly influential studies in the 1950's on
conformity. In a typical study, subjects are shown a card with the figure below, and told
that the length of line “X” is exactly 6 inches. It is known that in the population, the
mean estimated length of line "B" is µ = 6 inches, when individuals are asked to
estimate the length of line "B" when they are alone.

To study conformity, subjects in the experiment join a group with 4 other
individuals, all of whom are confederates (i.e. they are actors who are part of the
experiment). The group is told that line "X" is exactly 6 inches. Each confederate is
then asked, one at a time, to estimate the length of line "B", and after each of them
agrees that line “B” is 7 inches in length, the subject is asked to estimate the length
of line "B". A sample of 10 subjects participate, and in this sample, the estimated
length that each participant reports is shown in the table below. Complete all 4 steps
of hypothesis testing to decide if there is a significant difference in estimates of the
length of line "B" among people who are asked while they are alone, compared to
when they are in a group.
