Expert Solution
Step 1

El nino is a powerful air-sea interaction phenomenon which causes variation in the global climate. During El-nino, there is an unusual warming of surface waters of Eastern and central Pacific Ocean and weakening or reversal of easterly trade winds in the atmosphere over the tropical Pacific Ocean.

During normal years, easterly trade winds blow from eastern tropical Pacific to western tropical Pacific. These trade winds bring warm moist air and warm surface waters towards the western Pacific. There is an accumulation of warm water in the western Pacific Ocean and upwelling of cold water in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
