2 Springdale Shopping Survey The survey performed by the shoppers in Springdale was very insightful. With special focus on eight different variables, it was very easy to determine some of the most important aspects to the average shopper’s experience. The variables that were focused on paid attention to the importance of the effortlessness of returning or exchanging goods, the high quality of goods for sale, low prices, the variety of sizes and styles, the helpfulness and friendliness of sales staff, convenient shopping hours, the cleanliness of stores and surroundings, and having a lot of bargain sales. These different variables were rated by shoppers on a scale of one to seven, one being the least important and seven being the most important. Taking these results and further analyzing them allows for a better understanding of the average preference, and what is most important to the shoppers in the Springdale area. By understanding what shoppers are looking for in their experience, the Springdale shopping centers can adjust their environment as such. What is Most Valuable to Shoppers? Focusing on the eight different categories provides a more in depth response of what shoppers want and prefer through their shopping experience. There are a lot of different ways to analyze these numbers, but some of the most effective computations we can derive are the average, the mode, and the third quartile. These sets of data help to reflect the average response from participants, the rating that appears the most and what rating is reflected the most often within the data set. The descriptive statistics for each variable differ slightly, which is what helps to understand the importance of each variable and what is most essential to each shopper’s experience. The descriptive statistics for each variable in this data set are different, but only slightly. According to Florida School Leaders (n.d.), statistical methods are used to summarize and describe a set of data. By looking at the different computations from the survey data, we can assume that some of these variables are less important to Springdale shoppers than others. For
3 example, in the data sets for the quality of goods, low prices, variety of sizes and styles, convenience of hours, and bargain sales, we can see that the outliers for each are 1, and more specifically, these categories have a certain amount of ratings that are above this outlier, making them more important to shoppers. Another statistic we can focus on from each variable is the mean or average rating. Based on this information, some of the most important aspects, that being those variables with the highest means are the quality of goods, low prices and bargains, and variety. The correlation coefficient, which measures the relationship of two variables according to Dean and Illowsky (2013), were all fairly similar in comparison to variable nineteen, high quality of goods. The comparisons of the variables show that some of the more important aspects to Springdale shoppers are convenient shopping hours, good variety, and bargain sales. With correlation coefficient, the higher the number the closer the relationship to the given number. The comparisons of the quality of goods to the other seemingly important aspects sheds more light on what shoppers prefer and look for during their shopping experience. Conclusion There are many different computations and formulas that can be used to help analyze large amounts of data from surveys. The different descriptive statistics allow us to break down the results and analyze them in a way that is useful and beneficial. Using the average as well as the mode are effective in assessing what is most important to shoppers as well as in other surveys with a large quantity of responses.
