STAT E-100 2023 Fall – Health Insurance Dataset Mission 7 For Mission 7, you will be examining the data set ‘Insurance’ as one sample taken randomly from the population. Confidence Intervals 1) Using the ‘charges’ column, calculate the 95% confidence z -interval for the population average charge (Charges) in the United States. To do this, list the point estimate (sample mean), z critical value, and sample size. For sigma (population standard deviation), use $12,105.48. You may use R Studio or calculate by hand. If you use R Studio, include the R code and output from R Studio. 13270.42 -+1.96x330.9436 12,621.77 – 13,9190694 2) Interpret the 95% confidence interval in context. We are 95% confident that the true population mean lies in the range of 12,621.77 – 13,919.069 Hypothesis Testing You are interested in examining whether a sample of residents in a small city in the United States have a similar BMI rates as the general U.S. population. According to the Center for Disease Control, the average adult in the U.S. has a BMI of 26.55. 3) Propose an approach to procure a sample of residents’ BMI in a small city in the US. What place(s) would you go to sample this data? How would you measure BMI? Refer to one or more of the sampling methods discussed during lecture in your response. Answers will vary. I would choose various places to gather my sample, highly frequented places like the supermarket or movie theater, elementary, middle, and high schools, fast food places, and gyms so I could get people of all sizes. If the town has a university or nursing home, I would also go there to procure my sample. I would use scales and measuring tapes that have been tested together to make sure that they are all valid and reliable. 4) What is the null hypothesis in statistical notation? H 0 : μ = 26.55 5) What is the null hypothesis written as a sentence? Null hypothesis: average BMI of residents in this small town is equal to 26.55, the same as the average for the entire US
STAT E-100 2023 Fall – Health Insurance Dataset Mission 7 6) What is the alternative hypothesis written in statistical notation? H a : μ≠ 26.55 7) What is the alternative hypothesis written as a sentence? Alternative hypothesis: the average BMI of this small town is not 26.55, which is the average BMI in the US.
