Create a null hypothesis (hypothesis of no effect)? a. The effect of adding strength and conditioning to a sports program has no effect on performance. b. Create a research hypothesis (hypothesis of effect)? a. The performance of an athlete in their specific sport may be increased upon adding a strength and condition component to their routine. 2. Why does the scientific method work? The scientific method works because it is a long standing proven way of conducting research that takes into account the various ways in which a study should be handled. It is not enough to just blindly go out and research something. Making sure the 6 steps are followed insures that the test is not only conducted properly, but that it can also be re-tested for errors by other researches and potentially receive the same results which would indicate a successful testing process. 3. Why do good samples make for good tests of research hypotheses? What is the danger in not selecting a representative sample? Making sure a good sample is used for a research hypothesis is crucial because it allows for various variables and types of indicators to be accounted for. If a sample is too small, vague, or chosen unwisely then the chances of the research showing an accurate representation are low. This is because a sample that is too low could only being showing outlier results, and an poorly chosen sample could give results that are not significant or meaningless to the initial hypothesis. 4. For the following research questions, create one null hypothesis, one directional research hypothesis, and one nondirectional research hypothesis for each statement. a. What are the effects of attention span on out-of-seat classroom behavior? a. Null: The attention span of out-of-seat classroom behavior has no statistical difference than those in their seat.
b. One Directional: The attention span on out-of-seat classroom behavior will be less than that of those in their seat. c. Nondirectional: The attention span of out-of-seat and in their seat classroom behavior will be have a significant difference. b. What is the relationship between the quality of a marriage and the quality of the spouses’ relationships with their siblings ? a. Null: There is no significant correlation between the quality of someone’s marriage and their relationship with their siblings. b. One Directional: The quality of a person’s marriage will be higher based on the quality of relationship that they have with their siblings c. Directional: The correlation between a person’s marriage and that of their relationship with their siblings will show differences. c. What is the best way to treat an eating disorder ? a. Null: There is no effective way to treat an eating disorder b. One Directional: Given that the participants follow through with treatments x, y, an z, option X will produce a greater result in treating their disorder and all options will show better results than not treating it all. c. Nondirectional: Of the options x, y, z, and non treatment, there will be significant differences between them. 5. Create two directional hypotheses in an area in which you might be interested in doing research. Within Sports, the effective average time of a strength and conditioning routine for a high performing athlete is 1 hour. Chapter 8 1. What are the characteristics of the normal curve? What human behavior, trait, or characteristic can you think of that is distributed normally? a. This is the very common bell shaped curve that we have all at one point seen. You need the mean, median, and mode to be equal to each. It must be symmetrical around the mean and the tails become closer to the x axis without ever touching it. The first thing that comes to mind is a grading scale for classrooms. Many teachers have shown this in their classes to demonstrate how the class did on a certain test. As expected many times the bell shaped curve has its peak at around the C grade mark with the right side being the high achievers, and the left side being the underachievers.
2. To compute a standard score, what three bits of information do you need ? a. You need the raw data, the mean, and the standard deviation 3. Standard scores, such as z scores, allow us to make comparisons across different samples. Why? a. The Z score can tell you where something lies along the normal curve with higher accuracy so that you know it isn’t just chance. Being able to produce the Z score and compare it to other samples allows for better comparison’s among tests. 4. Why is a z score a standard score, and why can standard scores be used to compare scores from different distributions with one another ? a. It is a standard score because it is based on the percent relevance to its place above or below the mean. Knowing this takes its value higher than just what was used during a specific test as you can then use what the Z score shows to compare to another test. It shows where it would lie on the normal curve. 5. The mean of a set of test scores is 50, and the standard deviation is 5. For a raw score of 55, the corresponding z score is +1. What’s the z score when the standard deviation is half as much, or 2.5? From this example, what can you conclude the effect of decreasing the amount of variability in a set of scores is on a standard score (given all else is equal, such as the same raw score), and why is this effect important? a. The Z score gets higher and becomes 2. This for one, could mean that the Z score is inversely related to the standard deviation. The higher the Z score means the higher that a value differs from what the standard deviation is and therefore perhaps, the higher the unlikelyhood. 6.
