Stats 300, Spring 2024 Luke Fuentes 1 Taja Suruki Shuanise A Comparison Of GPA and SAT Scores Introduction. For young adults starting their venture into higher education, SAT scores and GPA are the catalysts to their college options. With the lingering possibilities for choice of major, we often wonder how well these students perform and the differences between male and female scores. That brings about the following question our project addresses: What is the comparison between majors in their SAT and GPA scores? The SAT is a comprehensive test of cumulative knowledge an individual has obtained and withheld during the course of their high school career. The highest score you can achieve for the SAT is 1600, on the other hand, the lowest score you can receive is 400. GPA stands for Grade Point Average, this metric measures a student's overall performance during one academic year with the highest (usually) being a 4.00 and the lowest a 0.00. Data Collection. We sampled 20 first-year college students' SAT scores and GPAs and broke the scores down into categories of Male, Female, English Majors, and Biology Majors. For the category of GPA for males, the lowest score was 2.53 and the highest was 3.58, with a standard deviation of 0.36. Through the data collected, it is given that the females ended with a greater GPA score than males GPA score. The female's lowest score was 2.75 and their highest was 3.75, with a standard deviation of 0.29. For the SAT scores it shows that the males tested higher than the females. The male's lowest SAT score was 1046 and their highest was 1468, with a standard deviation of 129.9. The female's lowest SAT score was 1025, their high was 1475 and their standard deviation was 129.28. Even though the females tested higher for GPA, higher scores on your SAT can make up for a low GPA. Your SAT score is compared to the country versus your GPA score is compared to just your school.
Stats 300, Spring 2024 Luke Fuentes 2 Taja Suruki Shuanise A Comparison Of GPA and SAT Scores Results/Discussion. Starting with English GPA (refer to appendix) we found the average to be 2.95 with a wide dispersion and a left tail. For English SAT scores we calculated that on average they scored 1158 with a smaller dispersion and equal tails to the left and right. Biology majors had an average of 3.28 for their GPA scores with a tighter dispersion and a huge left tail. Biology Majors had an average score of 1275.1 on their SAT with a well-rounded dispersion area with a left tail. Male students on average had a GPA of 2.96 with a right tail.
Stats 300, Spring 2024 Luke Fuentes 3 Taja Suruki Shuanise A Comparison Of GPA and SAT Scores Male students on average scored 1189.2 on their SAT with a big sloping right tail. Female students on average had a GPA of 3.27 with a tight dispersion and almost equal tails. Female students on average scored a 1244.3 on their SATs with a long right tail. Summary. Based on the data collected we can safely state the following. First, the Biology GPA average was in a sense significantly higher than that of English majors. The same can be said when comparing the two majors for SAT scores, with Biology majors scoring on average higher than English Majors. Moving on to Male comparison to Females we find that Females average higher GPAs than that of their male counterparts. We can say the same when comparing Male and Female students’ SAT scores. The conclusions that were drawn from this compilation of data put it simply (and nicely) that the majority of students who follow the Biology major path tend to score higher on their state exam (SAT) as well as graduate with a greater GPA than that of their English major counterpart. The same can be said for Female Students in comparison to Male

Stats 300, Spring 2024 Luke Fuentes 4 Taja Suruki Shuanise A Comparison Of GPA and SAT Scores students. With a tighter dispersion among female students, we conclude that they tend to be more studious and affluent. The same can not be said for Male students as the boxplot (refer to Results/Discussion) displays a stretched dispersion, hence showcasing the wide array of Male students from both sides of the academic spectrum. From the Lowest scores to the Highest scores but the majority falling short of that High achievement. With future research, we can expand upon the options of majors and increase the sample size to project a more accurate representation of high school graduates. If this research is to be continued we are sure that there wouldn't be as big of a difference between majors as shown with only English and Biology. With an increased sample size we can assume that the average GPA and SAT scores between male and female students alike would be closer in competition and not as vast as our 20-student sample.
