To determine whether a new sleeping pill has an affect that varies with dosage, a researcher randomly assigns adult insomniacs, in equal numbers, to receive either 4 or 8 grams of the sleeping pill. The amount of sleeping time is measured for each subject during an 8-hour period after the administration of the dosage. What type of design is this, and what type of statistic is needed to analyze the data (consider ABAB studies)? From the given information, the researcher assigns insomniac adults to either 4 or 8 grams of the sleeping pill randomly. Moreover, the sleeping time is measured for each adult in the time period of 8 hours of time. As a result, each adult has an equal chance to be randomly assigned. This type of design is called ‘Completely Randomized Design.’ In the completely randomized design, treatments are assigned to experimental units completely at random and every experimental unit has the same probability of receiving any treatment (homogenous experimental units) (Witte & Witte, 2016). Any difference among experimental units receiving the same treatment is considered an experimental error. In addition, where there is a large variation among experimental plots, the completely randomized design is rarely utilized (Witte & Witte, 2016). In this case, the completely randomized design is utilized to analyze data and the test statistic is utilized for analyzing the data is the two sample t-test. A two sample t-test is performed when two observations are made on each observational unit (Witte & Witte, 2016). Reference: Witte, R. S., & Witte, J. S. (2016). Statistics (11th ed.). Wiley.
