STAT 151 Mock Assignment Due date : refer to the Course Outline Purposes This assignment has two parts. The first part assesses your knowledge of m msampling, population, descriptive vs. inferential study, and designed experiment vs. observational study. The first part also assesses your understanding of choosing proper numerical and graphical tools to summarize data. The second part assesses your skills in using R commander to create graphs and interpret their meaning and obtain descriptive measures of a given data set. Instructions Important note : For every assignment in this course, you are required to complete the questions or tasks in Part A by hand. This means that to do any calculation or drawing, you will NOT use R commander or any computer application. That is, you are meant to do the calculations manually with a non-programmable scientific calculator and use a pen or pencil to draw figures or build a distribution table on paper (or on an iPad/tablet). Then you will submit a photo of your written solution using the appropriate submission box on the corresponding Crowdmark submission page. Before you complete Part B using R commander, you should read and practice the R commander steps by following the related examples in the Lab Manual and the Demos, which you can download via a link in the Course Content folder on Moodle. Graphs should be labelled appropriately, and units should be included in answers when appropriate. Final answers should be rounded to 3 decimal places. Part A-Lecture Component 1. Suppose I give a test to a class of 7 students. Their grades are as follows. 50 50 100 50 50 50 50 a)What is the mode of the dataset? b)What is the mean (average) of the dataset? c)What is the median of the dataset? d)Why is the mean you obtained larger than the median you obtained? a)Mode = most common value = 50 b) Mean (average) = (50+50+50+50+50+50 + 100)/7 = 400/7= 57.14 c)Median = middle value in the ordered data Ordered data set is: 50 50 50 50 50 50 100 Median =Middle data value occurs in 4 th ranked position in a data set of 7 values = 50 d)The individual who got 100 causes the mean (average) to be larger than the median.
Part B-Lab Component 1. Recently, statistics students at MacEwan completed a survey. Raw data can be found in the file STATISTICSSTUDENTSURVEYFORR. It contains the column ALBBEST, a variable that measures which Alberta political party students think had the best platform (Conservative, Green, Liberal, NDP). a)What type of variable is ALBBEST? Categorical (not ordered) b) Use SOFTWARE to tally the counts and percents for parties. What party is most preferred? Commands needed: Statistics > Summaries > Frequency Distributions Variables (pick one or more): ALBBEST Apply, OK The most preferred party is the NDP party (it has the highest tally/count).
