3.2 & 3.3 Worksheet 1) Below are the calorie distributions for a sample of Child and Adult cereals. Which data set has the larger standard deviation? Why? Justify your answer. Th data set of the adult because data values are all spread out while out while the child is set on the mean. 2) Consider the following two quantitative data sets: Set A: The times (in minutes) of all competitors in the 1,500-meter running track-and-field event at the most recent Olympic Games. Set B: The times (in minutes) of all competitors in the 1,500-meter running track-and-field event at all high school meets in the United States last year. Which data set would you expect to have the larger SD? Why? Justify your answer. The data set that have the largest SD is set B because it has a larger simple size. 3) A classroom of students has their heights measured (in inches) for statistics investigation. The tallest student in the class is 71 inches tall.
One student is assigned to record all the values. That student made a mistake when recording one of the values. When they meant to record the 71, they accidentally entered 711. What is the effect of this mistake on the median and IQR? Why? Justify your answer. It has no significance in the mean or IQR, so it will not affect. 4) Which boxplot is a reasonable summary of the data used to create the histogram? There are 16 data points. Why? Justify your answer. The box plot C because we the histogram is skewed to the left and it is the best representation of the data point. 5) A survey taken in a large statistics class contained the question: "What's the fastest you have driven a car (in miles per hour)?" The five-number summary for the 87 males surveyed is: min = 55, Q1 = 95, Median = 110, Q3 = 120, Max = 155 Should the largest observation in this data set be classified as an outlier? Why? Justify your answer. No because is not too far away from the other data values and there is more points that are closer to the max than the min.
