Testing Differences in Means Overall directions: Open the data file DiffDataProject.xlsx in the Week 7 Homework Folder. Use appropriate Excel functions to complete the required calculations. In your copy of this file, write your responses to the discussion questions. Both your Excel and Word files are due in Assignment Submissions on BlackBoard by November 7 th . Part 1 Using Sheet 1, find the data about calories in yogurt flavors, paired by brand. i) Create a column of differences using values for Strawberry – Peach . ii) Use the =AVERAGE and =STDEV.S commands on the difference data to find d and s d . Round these to 2 decimal places. iii) To complete the table below, use the command =CONFIDENCE.T to find the maximum error E in each case, rounding to 2 decimal places. Then give the Lower and Upper Values of confidence intervals. Remember, Upper = d + E Lower = d E Confidence Level Mean Maximum Error Lower Upper 90% 94% 97% vi) Focus on the 90% confidence interval. Based on the signs within the confidence interval, summarize how the calories in Peach flavored yogurt compare to the calories in Strawberry flavored yogurt. Part 2 Using Sheet 2, revisit the calories in yogurt flavors. i) Create a column of differences using values for Peach – Strawberry . ii) Use the =AVERAGE and =STDEV.S commands on the difference data to find d and s d . Round these to 2 decimal places. ii) As you compute a 90% confidence interval for the mean difference in this case, note the following: Maximum Error: Lower: Upper: iii) Based on the signs within the confidence interval, summarize how the calories in Strawberry flavored yogurt compare to the calories in Peach flavored yogurt.
Part 3 Use the data on sheet 3. Let row B represent hours per fish caught fishing from the shore, and let row A represent hours per fish caught fishing from a boat. The data are paired by month from October through April. i) State your choice of one way to form the difference between these pairs of data. ii) Use the =AVERAGE and =STDEV.S commands on the difference data to find d and s d . Round these to 3 decimal places. iii) Compute a 90% confidence interval for the mean difference in this case, note the following: Maximum Error: Lower: Upper: vi) Based on the signs within the confidence interval, discuss whether one way of fishing is consistently better than the other.
