Fredrick K. Brown PADM 5800 November 2nd, 2023 Week 3: Reflection Learning Activity What is the public service mission of your agency or organization (or the organization that you hope to work for)? How does the organization benefit the people it serves? I work at a charter public school called Kairos Academy. Its a middle and high school located in south city St. Louis, Mo. The mission of the school reads as follows “Kairos Academies is here to empower students to direct their own lives and learning. We are a grassroots movement of educators trying to rethink public education for the 21st century. By leveraging technology and reimagining traditional instruction, Kairos personalizes the learning experience and nurtures student agency. Our model develops not just academic knowledge, but the organizational, social, and emotional competencies students need for true agency in our changing economy and society.” I think that the school benefits the public in several ways. At Kairos, a private school that's free for students, the goal is to provide a personalized learning experience that empowers them to make their own decisions regarding their education. They offer a variety of approaches such as restorative justice and a curriculum known as Summit Learning. Other schools in the Saint Louis area are not this innovative educationally. What is your role and contribution in this regard? How do you, or how could you, help your organization to better achieve its public service mission? Although it may be difficult to see and measure the results of the specific tasks you perform or responsibilities you have, make an effort to think through how you directly or indirectly contribute to making people’s lives better. Kairos has a restorative justice type of approach to discipline. My department is called the Restorative Justice Department. My role is called a Restorative Justice Associate. Our role is to oversee the culture of the school. We handle behaviors, mend relationships, create events, and provide feedback to teachers. At Kairos, the concept of restorative justice is focused on helping people resolve conflicts and build better relationships. We believe in the idea that discipline should be focused on education instead of punishment. Personally, my biggest focus and way of helping my organization is to provide the safest learning environment possible. School should be a safe space for kids to learn but have fun as well. What specific steps can you take to highlight and reinforce the public service contributions of those around you, including your peers, your supervisor, and your employees? We have a channel for main communication within the organization. Sometimes I use that channel to point out the gratitude I have for my peers, supervisors, and employees. Another way to highlight or reinforce public service for the people around me is shouting them out on social media. Social media platforms can reach a wide variety of people, and spread awareness.
