The preamble of the NASW Code of ethics states “ The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. A historic and defining feature of social work is the profession’s dual focus on individual well-being in a social context and the well-being of society. Fundamental to social work is attention to the environmental forces that create, contribute to, and address problems in living” (socialworker.org) . My social change project deals with the fact that LGBTQ+ persons are legally able to be discriminated against in certain states who allow for taxpayer-funded placement agencies to use a “sincerely held religious objection” to not place children with them for foster or adoption. Not only does this deal with the oppression of those who are being discriminated against but is also a huge negative for the children who are left without homes and stable, loving families. Going down the line to the societal level and environmental factors, we are continuing cycles of generational trauma for these children by not breaking those cycles with the opportunity to unlearn negative behaviors and heal from traumas. We are allowing our children to be broke and lead broken lives because of legal discrimination. If this issue didn’t exist, we would be able to empower those desiring to have a family but also the children who would have stability and resources to help them become self-actualized as well. I think that to lend advocacy efforts towards a change of this as a policy exemplifies 4 of our 6 core values: service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, the importance of human relationships, and integrity. Although I think that the core values are all evident in my social change project to a degree, I do not believe that competence is as evident in my chosen project as the other core values. I take competence to be more directly tied to our specific practice areas. This social change project is more of a general advocacy issue for me and not my practice area. I think that to make sure I uphold competence as a core value in my project I would seek to learn more about how this came to be allowed and learn more about the forces who oppose it to make connections to help make sure this is overturned and that it doesn’t happen again. I also believe that not only educating myself but also educating others is competence if I am helping others to be competent about the existence of this, why it is a problem, and how we join forces to alleviate it. Although this discussion post was for an assignment, I like the idea of doing an internal dialogue along these lines. When I desire to get involved in advocacy (against or for) an issue, I need to be asking myself how this aligns not only with my personal views of morality and value but how what I am doing fits in with the oath I took and my core principles for social work. As social workers, we have an “ethical responsibility to the broader society” (socialworker.org). This means we are expected and called to reach beyond our practice area and do more, specifically policy advocacy that embodies our core values as social workers. In my future practice, I hope to remember assignments like these and how to make sure my values are aligned with what is expected of me.
