1. In conjunction with local law enforcement agencies, many schools across the nation have implemented School Resource Officer Programs (SROs) in their school districts. Go to the website for the National Association of School Resource Officers at www.nasro.org Links to an external site. , and research this organization and answer the following questions. What type of lesson material is available for SROs? What other material should be included in this course? In order to become a School Resource Officer (SRO), an officer must complete the NASRO Basic School Resource Officer Course, a comprehensive forty-hour training program. This course is specifically designed to prepare SROs, law enforcement officers, school safety professionals, school administrators, and education professionals for their respective roles within the school environment. Throughout the training, participants will acquire a thorough understanding of the duties of an SRO based on NASRO's Triad Model of school-based policing. They will learn how to effectively engage with a diverse student body, provide support to students with disabilities and behavioral health issues, and address various public safety concerns such as digital safety, human trafficking, mental health, and substance abuse. Additionally, the course will cover essential practices for de-escalation, behavioral threat assessment, emergency operations planning, and responding to armed assailants. This comprehensive training equips officers with the necessary knowledge and skills to foster a safe and secure school environment for all students and staff members. Once an officer finishes the initial SRO course, they have the option to enroll in the Advanced SRO course. This advanced training, spanning twenty-four hours, is specifically crafted for law enforcement officers operating within educational institutions. Aligned with the SRO Triad model, the Advanced School Resource Officer Course enhances the officer's competencies and understanding in their capacities as a law enforcement officer, informal counselor, and educator within the school setting. In my opinion, both the basic and advanced courses, along with on-site school training, are essential. Observing daily school procedures firsthand is crucial as each day varies based on factors like the school's specifics, location, and grade levels. For example, in my daughter's elementary school, the SRO's warm and interactive approach, including giving high fives and hugs, along with daily communication with the children, fosters a sense of security and trust among the students. On the other hand, at the high school where I work, the SRO adopts a more authoritative stance, signaling to the students the importance of maintaining discipline and avoiding conflicts. This personalized approach
based on the school environment and demographics underscores the significance of tailored training and on-the-job experience for SROs. https://www.nasro.org/training/training-courses/ 2. Learn more about hate crimes by logging onto https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/ucr/hate-crime. Links to an external site. Find the latest report on hate crime statistics and answer the following questions. How many police agencies in your state reported incidents that involved hate? What was the total number of incidents? Select your city or a city near you. Were there any hate crime incidents reported? The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program defines hate crimes as criminal offenses driven by the offender's biases against a specific race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity. Data from the 2022 FBI Hate Crime statistics for North Carolina is sourced from 407 out of 530 participating law enforcement agencies in the state. The Incident Analysis report documented 310 hate incidents, with 170 related to race/ethnicity/ancestry, 75 to religion, 48 to sexual orientation, 7 to disability, 1 to gender, 2 to gender identity, and 7 to multiple bias categories. I decided to take a closer look at hate crime incidents in Harnett County, since this is where I reside. In 2022, it reveals just 4 race/ethnicity/ancestry- related hate crimes reported: 3 classified as anti-white and 1 as anti-other race. The relatively low number of reported incidents in the county was quite surprising to me. CDE (cjis.gov)
