Running head: 1 Deviance and Its Consequences Alysia Wyatt, College of Education Grand Canyon University Prof. Deborah Wilson 08/10/2023
2 Deviance is defined as a behavior that goes against social rules and social “norms”. There are various reasons and concepts on what causes a person to act in a devious way or have devious behavior. Some theories are that it is hereditary, caused by substance abuse, psychological, or a behavior disorder. Unfortunately, a lot of what would be considered deviant behavior to some has become the social “norm” for others. For instance, the reality show “The Real Housewives”. This reality show focuses on women of wealth or success who are of a certain social status in a lot of the bigger cities such as Beverly Hills, New York, Orange County, etc. The women of the Real Housewives reality show are infamous for many deviant behaviors. Some of these behaviors include but are not limited to getting drunk, being promiscuous, cheating, fighting, and being plain mean to some of the other women. This lifestyle of being wealthy enough to be able to travel the world and buy whatever they want, when they want may seem fascinating to those who are not as fortunate to be able to afford such a lavish lifestyle. With that said this behavior is not only considered sinful, but also deviant. These women go around and get away with those without a camera following them and not as much money would go to jail for most of the time. Public intoxication, fighting, yelling, throwing objects, and flipping tables is considered a crime and deviant in the eyes of the law and also in the eyes of Christ. This behavior is glorified instead of being vilified and only makes these ladies even more popular and even more money. The demographics of the groups that witness this behavior from week to week come from all backgrounds. However, it is specifically geared towards women. With that said, the women who watch this show are from all over, they are both wealthy and middle class, of all ethnic
3 backgrounds, employed and unemployed, etc. The women that are on these shows seem to attempt to set a standard for other women to strive for, whether it is deviant or not, or morally correct or not. This behavior is seemingly accepted, at least by all of the millions of viewers who watch it every week and follow it on social media. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, it seems as if, as far as the targeted demographic is concerned, this behavior was not only accepted but encouraged and promoted. The commercials to advertise for these shows to gain views would show such behavior in an attempt to gain ratings. With that said, there were several Christian blogs (some run by women), that came out against The Real Housewives, saying that it promoted bullying, manipulation, promiscuity, sex outside of marriage, etc. Some of these websites also claimed that it set a double standard and made women look embarrassing and uncouth, for example when the feuds would turn physical. A lot of women have also stated that these women should in fact be embarrassed, stating the fact that the show did not start out this way, but only got this way in an attempt to gain viewers when ratings started to drop. These women have allowed themselves to be set up and staged, and some made a mockery of them. Parents, particularly mothers, have started coming out of the woodwork saying they should set better examples for their children. Although there has been some backlash from these groups, there have been no real attempts to control the behavior. There have been certain cities that have been canceled for one reason or another, some of the reasons being certain behaviors. Some of these behaviors include rude, derogatory, or even racist comments that have been made either on or off the air and at times even to each other while being recorded. Deviance is being defined by social norms more

4 and more and unfortunately, the social norm is accepting more and more unethical behavior by biblical standards. It is also increasingly difficult because what one person considers deviant by not necessarily be considered deviant by another person. Once the definition of what is “normal” is defined, then anything outside of that can often be considered deviant.
