Research paper idea mapping [20 pts] Instructions: Using this template, students will write a memo on topic areas that interest them and explain how they relate to issues connected to citizenship for a diverse and just world . this is a first draft of your research paper plan. The next step will be a problem statement where you focus on one research question (or set of questions). You may change your focus after this, but all projects have to be approved. You may write longer than 2 pages, but you must write at least a full page. 1. Identify topics or topics of interest. If you’re considering more than one topic, please write about all you’re seriously considering. Explain how your topic or each topic connects to citizenship for a diverse and just world . [4pts] How do sentence practices contribute to the incarceration rates of African Americans compared to other racial groups? My topic has a deep intertwine with the concept of citizenship for a diverse and just world. In a diverse and just world, citizenship should be equitable and inclusive for all members of society, regardless of race or ethnicity. The disproportionate incarceration rates of African Americans compared to other racial groups highlight systemic injustices within the criminal justice system. It’s important to research and understand the root causes of this disparity for promoting citizenship in a diverse and just world. The issue of racial disparities in incarceration rates reflects broader societal inequalities rooted in historical and systemic racism. Achieving citizenship for a diverse and just world requires acknowledging and addressing these systemic injustices. (Addressing Andrea’s comment: I didn’t want to limit it to specifically drug-related offenses petty crimes, etc. because the sentencing inequality issue is in all areas, so I wanted to give a whole system overview. By sentence practices, I just mean how they would choose to sentence an African American man vs a white-American man for the same crime. This is also why I feel like if I limit it to a specific offense, I wouldn’t be able to expand my paper enough to reach the minimum page limit. 2. Identify potential open data sources or ideas about the kinds of data that would interest you. Available data will limit your choice of topic. 3. Are you thinking about this project in connection to any social problem? If so, what is it? Are you sure that you are picking a topic about which you are willing to allow evidence to change your mind? In other words, have you turned normative questions into analytic questions? If not, go back to Q1 and think of another topic. [4pts] Yes, my project is connected to a major social problem within our justice system which is systematic racism and racial bias. I am open to allowing evidence to change my mind regarding this topic. While I approach the issue with an open mind, I understand that when systemic biases and injustices are present, I am willing to reconsider my perspectives in light of new evidence, research findings, or alternative viewpoints. This willingness to remain open-minded is essential in all researchers, research, and topics that involve critically analyzing complex social problems and developing effective solutions. 4. Do you have any research questions that you’re considering? In other words, have you started to move from topics to questions? [4pts] Yes. When I started, I knew I wanted to research a disparity that was presented in the justice system. My initial question was about body-worn cameras and how they impact transparency and accountability in law enforcement. I couldn’t find too much qualitative data or comparative data since this was a new implementation. So, I chose “How do sentence practices contribute to the incarceration rates of African Americans compared to other racial groups?” since it is an ongoing issue and has been since the creation of the justice system. 5. Have you identified any prior sociological research, from class materials or otherwise? List any citations here.
