According to (Developing the Cultural Awareness Skills of Behavior Analysts), Understanding cultural contingencies and norms is crucial as they shape behavior, which may or may not be acceptable or familiar to behavior analysts from another culture. (Fong et al., 2016). By being aware of cultural factors, including cultural preferences and norms, behavior analysts can better serve individuals by selecting appropriate assessments and interventions. (Fong et al., 2016). knowing about yourself, your culture, and how your culture influences you is crucial for both you and your clients when working and establishing relationships with culturally diverse people. It also helps you communicate effectively, build trust, provide culturally responsive services, and create a supportive environment where clients feel understood and valued. This ultimately leads to a more successful and meaningful helping relationship. (Diller, 2019) Identify at least two issues that might arise when interacting or working with others if you are not culturally aware of yourself… When working or interacting with others, not being culturally aware of yourself can lead to: 1. Misinterpretation of Communication: Based on the case study in the text, they made assumptions and formed negative opinions about Elena's parents based on their hesitations, excuses, and lack of cooperation during the phone conversation. (Diller, 2019) However, without cultural awareness, the counselor didn’t take into consideration that the parent's behavior could be influenced by cultural norms, language barriers, or different communication styles. This misinterpretation led to a breakdown in understanding and hindered effective communication between the counselor and the parents. 2. Lack of Sensitivity to Cultural Norms: The counselor expressed upset
and discomfort when Elena's brother-in-law (her godfather) accompanied the parents to the meeting. This situation highlights a lack of sensitivity to cultural norms and family dynamics. (Diller, 2019). In some cultures, involving extended family members in important decisions or meetings is common and considered respectful. By dismissing the brother-in-law's presence, the counselor unintentionally disregarded the family's cultural values and potentially created tension and resistance from the parents. 3. Stereotyping and Bias: Without cultural awareness, individuals may rely on stereotypes or biased assumptions when interacting with others. These stereotypes can lead to unfair judgments, prejudice, and discrimination. (Diller, 2019). Human service work now acknowledges the intersectionality of culture with other social identities such as race, gender, and socioeconomic status. (Kohli et al., 2010). It also recognizes the power dynamics and social justice issues that arise from cultural differences.
