CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people Task 1 Undertaken a structured process to reflect on own perspectives on diversity. This should involve meeting with a supervisor, another senior staff member or appropriate professional counsellor. In doing this you should: How will I consider my own social and cultural perspectives and biases in relation to particular cultural groups? I can talk to others regarding their culture and practices to best try and understand them. I can find out about their mannerisms, what they like to eat, important customs and cultural events and common sayings in a respectful way to immerse myself in their world .This would help me to reflect on what biases and perspectives I might have had in relation to that culture group and develop a new understanding and appreciation of that group. This will help me provide a service that meets the needs of target groups and be aware of the values and social and cultural perspectives and biases of myself and others. I will be particularly aware not to impose my beliefs and perspectives on others, showing respect for theirs. How will I identify my own limitations in terms of social awareness? I can identify my own limitations and be socially aware by ensuring that I make everything fair and equitable as well as provide a non- discriminative service to all clients. I will adopt ethical values of the industry and my organisation and work well with diversity. I accept that people have different ideas, values and perspectives, they may have a different way of doing things, I will be adaptable and willing to conduct my service in the preferred way for them. I realise that I should not make assumptions about others and treat everyone as unique and individual. How will I develop strategies to address identified areas of concern? I can improve my social awareness by understanding my own biases and perspectives, being prepared to put them aside and understanding others. I can research different cultures, customs and values. I will not expect everyone to share my values, I will treat all clients with respect and be non-judgemental, will not stereotype and build rapport by asking open questions about them and their beliefs.
I can participate in local cultural events. I can do cross-cultural training. I can identify what may make others uncomfortable and look for objectives to present in a clear manner.
