Learning Experience #2 Reflection Questions 1. What worked? Why did it work? Having the children work as a team and ask each other for assistance was a wonderful exercise of collaboration and the children did really well with understanding how it works and how it is helpful to assist others. The children have built relationships with each other throughout the school year and activities like this one help build new relationships and grow existing ones. The children liked holding an animal piece while everyone else took their turn, it gave them something to fiddle with. Also having the children go in pairs actually made the activity go by quicker than if I had just chosen one child at a time. 2. What was challenging? Why do you think it was challenging? How did you deal with it? What would you do differently next time? It was challenging to stay on topic, which wasn’t the main priority of this activity in circle, so I was okay with the children talking and telling how they knew where they animals lived in the world. It was challenging when too many children were talking at once. I would use an attention getter and then remind them that it is more enjoyable when we can hear what each other is saying and we learn more this way. They took to this concept readily. They had to be brought back to only a couple of friends talking at once about three times. I don’t think I would do anything differently next time besides maybe having recorded animal sounds, but I personally loved hearing the kids noises and honestly, none of them needed to be wrong. 3. What did you learn about a child or the children who participated in your activity? I learned which children are good at collaborating already and will in the future pair them to help with those who are still learning this skill. I learned that my focus child loves to shine in areas that he has a lot of knowledge in. He did great helping me with this activity and anytime that a team couldn’t guess an animal noise he readily volunteered and stayed very engaged in the circle activity. I also learned that all the children are eager to help each other and learn to get along in activities. They enjoyed cheering each other on and being there for support, which is just wonderful to see at such a young age. 4. How did you adapt your teaching to support the learning of an individual Child?
I ended up adding the aspect of asking the group for help with animal noises or the main question of whether an animal goes in the snow or not. This took the pressure off of the one or two children that were on the spot and helped build relationships between the children. Not all children wanted to talk to the whole group so having a partner helped adapt for these children. The partner could voice the answers and opinions for both of them. Each child had individual questions and we tried to get through all of them. Some answers came from general knowledge, some from other children, and others were written down to explore later. 5. What strengths did your activity have that helped children meet the Objective? How did you follow the children’s interests within the learning Experience? Having the children paired up as partners helped with the social-emotional aspect. Making animal noises encouraged the skill of imitation and exploration of nature. The conversations and problem solving was a great example of social-emotional as well and self-regulation. I allowed the children to tell stories and share ideas about the animals and how they knew what the animal-like as far as snow and what the sound sounded like. I feel like the entire group learned a lot, factually about animals and how to better interact and connect with one another. 6. What are you noticing about your growth in presenting learning experiences compared to the ones you facilitated ED 101? N/A
