2 Family History One’s family history has been kept since the times before Christ. Pharaohs and Kings had certain things put to stone or painted on walls to convey what had happened throughout the years. It is what we have come to know as hieroglyphics . It is incredible how much has changed and how now we have so much more than just the written word to utilize. However, looking back and tracing your family line can lead to much knowledge and interesting facts. What I learned Many years ago, I was curious about my grandfather’s, G-Daddy, family history. What interested me was that he was born in 1915, and he did not know where the family originated from. Back then, I had to utilize microfiche at the Mormon church. It was not easy, and it could take weeks to find one person. Over the years, I have delved back in at different times and have been able to find more information. For this genogram, I only listed a few generations to have less than ten pages. The only thing that stood out to me was the fact that besides my children, grandchildren, and father, everyone else shown is deceased. Is the Genogram useful? My current employer utilizes a program that includes the EcoMap and a Genogram. The Genogram is completed during a family assessment. These are very useful in social work as they show trends and changes through a family’s generations. For us, we ask about education, medical issues, mental health, employment, and even substance abuse. We ask about other areas, but those are just some of the main ones. We then review the genogram with the family and see what they notice sticking out. Some will show a long line of trauma, substance abuse, high school graduates, or even those who
