SOC 330 Module Three Worksheet Walk a Mile Name: Patricia Hernandez Course and section number: SOC-330-17999 Person you selected: Bill Cosby To complete this worksheet, review the Module Three Worksheet Guidelines and Rubric document. 1. Was this person’s minority status ascribed or achieved? In other words, discuss how the individual arrived at being labeled as a member of his or her minority group. Explain your viewpoint in three to five sentences. Bill Cosby's minority status was achieved. When he was a child his father was in the navy so he was never around much. Cosby worked different jobs which led to him dropping out of high school and joining the Navy. While in the navy he earned his diploma and later became a very successful comedian. 2. Consider how this minority group was treated when this person was born and during this person’s early childhood by answering the following questions: How did members of the majority group view and treat individuals in this person’s minority group during this person’s childhood? For example, what activities might this person have been discouraged from participating in? Bill Cosby is African American he was born in 1937. In 1937 segregation was still legal and African American people did not get the same treatment as white people. Because segregation was still legal Cosby was dissuaded from participating in sports and school. But with time segregation was banned and blacks and whites started to coexist with each other at the time they also started to increase the number of black students in universities which made things better for Cosby. What were some of the social norms, in relation to minority status, that shaped what was expected of this person during this period of his or her life? Some of the social norms that shaped Cosby’s life were mainly influenced by the policies of segregation. This minority group was expected to stay within their group's spaces as well as have places where African American people could use such as bathrooms, schools, and even public spaces. Everything started to change more during World War II when African American people's involvement helped change the whites' views this was the first step to a long journey for racial equality. 3. Name one classical theory (for example, functionalism, conflict, or symbolic interactionism) that helps to explain the social norms at play during this period in the person’s life. In one paragraph, describe why and how the two are related.
When it comes to that time period Conflict theory seems like the best answer. During this time elective individuals enforced the issue of segregation keeping the African American minority group separated from the whites and telling them what they could and could not do. They expected this minority group to follow the rules whether they liked it or not and if they went against it there were some harsh punishments. This is an example of conflict theory because it talks about how the majority groups hold power over the minority groups to keep control. But even though the majority group tried their best to keep segregation the war made the people see otherwise and at that point there was nothing the majority group could do about the change that was underway. 4. Consider the ways in which perceptions about this minority group have changed over this person’s lifetime by answering the following questions: How do members of the majority group view and treat individuals in this minority group today? For example, what career choices might this person’s children be encouraged to pursue that he or she was not? Today racism is still a problem maybe not as bad as it used to be but there are still some issues toward this minority group. When Cosby was younger, he was not allowed to do any kind of sports or attend any school he wanted. Today his children can play any sport they want, attend any school they want, or even choose any career that they want. Back when Cosby was a child the majority group's way of punishing this minority group was not to allow them the same opportunities the whites had. Today their way of punishing this minority group is through criminal justice. This could be because of some biases or stereotypes that still linger from the past. What are some of the social norms that shape what is expected of this person today? Some of the social norms that shape what is expected of this person today are things like career choices. When I say career choices, I mean things like playing professional sports such as basketball, or football. Today society has an unconscious point of view of what an African American person is supposed to do with their life. Society will have this unconscious point of view that if they see a tall African American person they must play professional basketball or just be in a team of basketball. If they see a big person whether that is weight or muscular with a nice body composition, then they have the skills to play football. To some extent that is still racism which today is basically racial profiling. 5. Name one classical theory (for example, functionalism, conflict, or symbolic interactionism) that is well related to the shift in social norms for this minority group. In one paragraph, describe why and how the theory and the shift in norms are related.
