Practice Toolbox: Child Assessment Chyna Coulanges Master of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6111: Advanced SW Practice I Dr. Savvas Georgiades June 16 th , 2024
2 Practice Toolbox: Child Assessment When it came to diagnosing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), I decided to use the NICHQ Vanderbilt Assessment Scales. Since I often get calls from parents looking for assistance for their children with ADD or ADHD, I decided to utilize this tool. This examination enables parents to examine their child's condition prior to seeking advice from a professional (American Academy of Pediatrics and National Institute for Children’s Health Quality, 2002). The reason I chose this tool is because ADD/ADHD may have a big influence on a child's academic achievement, and I'm curious about what happens next in terms of their treatment (Park et al., 2021). Why might it be especially helpful for use with children? The fact that millions of children have been identified as having attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) highlights the significance of this assessment tool (American Academy of Pediatrics and National Institute for Children’s Health Quality, 2002). While working with adolescents, the relevance of utilizing such tools is highlighted by the ubiquity of the situation. The NICHQ Vanderbilt Assessment Scales stands out among the many various instruments that are available for assessing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) because of its accuracy and the useful information that it provides for professionals (American Academy of Pediatrics and National Institute for Children’s Health Quality, 2002). A parent who is completely involved in the assessment process may give heightened awareness and assure more accuracy, which is another reason why this evaluation is useful for children. In order to get more accurate findings, it is recommended that the evaluation be carried out by a parent or guardian. Self-assessments have the potential to minimize symptoms or ignore important information.
3 What challenges or limitations might there be for this assessment tool? If the parent is not actively involved in their kid's life or does not pay careful attention to their child, I believe that this will be the most significant of the disadvantages. Given these circumstances, the evaluation tool would be rendered useless. Although attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) impacts children both inside and outside of the classroom, this examination has the potential to increase awareness within the family even if a parent is not participating (American Academy of Pediatrics and National Institute for Children’s Health Quality, 2002).
