Who Are You and What Are You Doing? Atiya Lovett Department of Social Work and Human Services SWK8075 - Advanced Social Work Practitioner as a Leader of Social Change Dr. Kay Carter April 28, 2024
Who you are and your social work leadership role in the community: My name is Atiya and in five years I will be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a doctorate in Social Work. As a social work leader in the community, my role is to assess the needs of that community whether it be individuals, families, or groups. After completing the needs assessment, I can determine the best way to meet those needs, whether it is creating a program, advocating, or providing resources. During my leadership role, I would advocate for the vulnerable and underrepresented population. Leadership Style : As a leader at a non-profit agency in 2029, the leadership styles that I would utilize include transformational and democratic. transformational leadership creates an indirect effect on commitment and role clarity when it comes to the attitudes of the employees (Tafvelin et al., 2014). This leadership style results in a workplace where employees know their assignments and are committed to them. The transformational leadership approach includes clarity, communication, commitment, and consistency. On the other hand, democratic leadership allows the employees an opportunity to follow and have an input in the decisions being made (Parés, et al., 2017). This type of leader empowers others, encourages them to share ideas, and gives them growth opportunities. Both leadership styles along with skills such as empathy, active listening, critical thinking, patience, advocacy, and adaptability will serve me well during my leadership in five years. Community: Incarcerated youth are considered a vulnerable population due to the children having mental health issues or substance abuse issues that usually result in the reasons they were arrested. These children can be locked up at any age due to most states not having an age limit on incarceration and the age typically stops at 18 where they can then be sent to adult prison. The gender and race of the children also vary. However, research has shown that black counterparts are more incarcerated than their white counterparts. Social Issue Children have been punished and confined to jails since 1890 when the California State Legislature created the first correctional institution for youth (Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice, n.d.). Although the correctional institution was created for rehabilitation it has become unhealthy for children. Incarceration leaves our youth vulnerable as they do not get any say as to what happens to them, they do not have access to certain items or
family members, and they can be placed in solitary confinement. Incarceration in youth causes negative mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and even death (Barnert et al., 2018). This issue has become more dangerous for children over the years that, President Barack Obama passed a bill banning the use of solitary confinement for incarcerated youth in federal prison (Eilperin, 2023). Not every state or political figure agrees with this, so some states still practice solitary confinement in youth. This issue does not allow for rehabilitation as negative mental health factors cause more damage than good. One issue that can be solved under my leadership: One issue that I believe can be solved during my leadership is promoting awareness around the need for alternative measures instead of incarceration as it does not allow rehabilitation. I would be qualified to lead this effort due to my educational background and my experience working with at-risk children in the child welfare system. The skills I will continue to learn over the next five years will make me the best person to lead the effort as completing the needs assessment will prepare me for assisting, promoting awareness, and advocating for the population. Non-profit Agency : L.E.E (Lee’s Equine Equestrian) Mission: To strengthen knowledge, promote awareness, and provide an alternative to incarceration for at-risk youth through rehabilitation. Vision: L.E.E.’s vision for at-risk youth is to have equitable access to rehabilitation opportunities, have a support system, and manage their mental health regardless of circumstance. Goals: 1. To provide mental health awareness for children being incarcerated. a. Ensuring the community knows the mental health issues surrounding incarcerated youth is a start to ensuring their needs are being met and the mental health issues are decreasing.
