Module One Question 1 Do you have any healthy habits? What role have culture and environment played in the healthy or unhealthy habits that you have formed? I have a few healthy habits, and culture/environment has played a significant role in forming these habits. One healthy habit that I have is that I practice self-care almost daily. The role that my environment has played in helping me create these habits is by showing me what happens when I don't practice self-care and providing me with the means to maintain this habit. My other healthy habit is exercising for 30 minutes a day. My environment has played a significant role by showing me that loving your body is good but being healthy is important. Module One Question 2 Choose a society from the map. Within that society, characterize one of the social science principles we identified in this learning block. As a reminder, the social science principles we focus on in this course are: social roles, social institutions, social norms, and beliefs and values. For example, what is a social role that exists in Okinawa? Who occupies this role? A social role that exists in Okinawa is that women are viewed as "respected spiritual leaders". Family events are a crucial part of their beliefs, and the women organize these events. Families in Okinawa are very large and are extremely close-knit. Females in this culture are involved in every aspect of these events well into their elder years. Module One Question 3 Provide an example of the environment influencing the population in an area of increased longevity. Then provide an example of the population in that area influencing its environment. The environment in Sardinia, Italy influences the population by providing them with the ability to make a specific wine that has been proven to prevent cardiovascular disease. Their Shepherding lifestyle influences their environment by giving them access to Pecorino cheese, which has a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids. Those acids have been proven to be something you need to be healthy. Module One Question 4 Think about factors affecting your lifestyle in comparison to the areas of increased
longevity. Characterize two social science principles in your day-to-day life. Use the two principles that you did not describe in response to the earlier question. For example, you could describe some social norms in your day-to-day life. One social norm that is in my day-to-day life is daily human interaction whether it be with my family or my professor. As humans, we need daily human interaction to survive, otherwise we would be more depressed than usual. I am constantly calling my mom or responding to random messages on Messenger. I even hop into live chats on TikTok just to say hi to a random person. If I did not engage in conversation with someone daily, I would probably isolate myself and end up having a nervous breakdown. Another social norm that I practice daily is eating healthy. I have learned the hard way that eating healthy is necessary to live a long life. I am currently overweight and it is causing some health issues for me. One of the things that my doctor told me to do to reverse some of them is to eat healthier. Now I eat less sweets and I also introduced fruits and veggies into my diet, as well as calorie counting. Module One Question 5 From a social science perspective, what are three factors that shape your day-to-day life? For example, you could describe some factors that influence your social interactions, your access to certain foods, your day-to-day activities, the pace of life in your area, etc. One of the factors that shape my day-to-day life is that I go to church on Sundays and go to Bible study as well. My environment plays into this because there are not only churches on every block in my town but I also see church service advertisements in my mail. I go to church because my mom has had me go there since I was a child. It was ingrained into who I am as a person. I was influenced by my mom as a kid, and I carried that habit into my adult life. The second factor that influences my day-to-day life is that I will always be nice to people even though I don't want to, deep down. Society plays a factor in this habit forming because we are taught either in church or in school that having good character and being nice is a good thing and that we will get rewarded for it later in life. The final factor that shapes my day-to-day life is taking time to take care of my mental health. From a very young age, society has shown me that taking care of your mental health is important. Whether it is by showing me meditation apps randomly or creating apps like TalkSpace where I can safely vent to a stranger and create a community where I can discuss what I am feeling without the negative stigma attached. Module One Question 6 Identify two social science issues related to war. One social science issue related to war is forced migration because many people flee during
wars and become refugees. As a result, societies must give them asylum which causes and raises legal questions and often leads to conflict. Another social science issue related to war is the economic toll war takes on any country that is involved in a war. Module One Question 7 Identify two social science issues related to education. A social science issue related to education is bullying because it is still happening to students at some point. This is a social science issue because of the psychological impact it has on students which is increased levels of stress, anger, or depression which often leads to higher suicide rates or even committing acts of violence against their peers. Another issue that relates to education is work-life balance for educators. This is a social science issue because educators devote so much time to things such as lesson planning, buying materials for their classes that the school doesn't provide, and maintaining a safe learning environment. As a result, they have very little time for things such as self-care and spending time with family which can lead to burnout and increased levels of stress. Module One Question 8 Recall: what are the five social institutions that we are examining in this course? The five social institutions that we are examining in this course are education, economy, government, family, and religion. Module One Question 9 Identify the social institutions discussed in this reading about India. The social institutions discussed in this reading about India were government, family, economy, and education. Module One Question 10 Choose one of the five social institutions. Describe some of the factors that have influenced this social institution in India.
