McGee2 Social work Core Values Introduction There are six social work core values that social workers use in their work profession. Many of these core values are essential to help the client feel safe and protected within their session. Being a social worker means that you must know boundaries and realize that client’s information must remain confidential. Clients trust your integrity and have faith in their social worker to make sure their information does not become public. There is also a problem with abuse and people who are in danger where we are mandatory reporters. There is a fine line of disclosing information and making sure people are safe. In the NASW Code of Ethics it talks about how social workers need to respect the client’s information and to not disclose private information unless it is crucial, (NASW, 2017). HIPPA is one law that is in place to make sure that people’s private information is not passed on to other people, (NASW, 2016). Social workers are an essential part of how today’s society operates. Social workers face a lot of challenges and hardships on an everyday basis. Social workers help their clients with community resources, counseling and much more. The Code of Ethics provides a layout, of competencies and ethical outlines to follow, (NASW, 2017). The code of ethics helps social workers follow guidelines and ethics that they need to treat and present their clients, (NASW, 2016). Maintaining privacy and keeping information between the clients and you are essential. Reporting abuse and making sure your client is safe is a must. My ethical and personal views are highly shaped by my hospice social worker experience. This essay will talk about personal and ethical views as well as three NASW Code of Ethics values, as working as a hospice social worker.
McGee3 Dignity and Worth of the Person Dignity and worth of a person are so important when it comes to your client and yourself. Dignity and worth of a person mean that as a professional, you have the responsibility to value the client’s self-will and realize that no matter who they are they have a sense of worth as a human being, (Barsky 2019). Every patient is treated with dignity and respect. When the patient is getting care, they are always covered, and nothing is ever showing. When we walk in the room, we introduce ourselves and tell them every step we are taking, even if they are non- responsive. Dignity and worth are one value that I try to always give everyone. No matter of age, race or gender, Dignity and worth should always be a top priority. This value hits close to home, especially when my grandpa passed away. My grandpa was in hospice, and they always showed him compassion and dignity. I was about the age of ten when he passed and to this day, I still think about it. Importance of Human relationships The importance of human relationship is so important in a social workers role. Having human relations and strengthening them can make someone’s life fuller and it can strengthen a relationship, (Barsky 2019). In hospice, we try to have the family all come together and be around the patient when the patient is near their end of life. When a patient is unconscious, we often go in the room and talk to the families about past life experiences, personalities, and family dynamics. Knowing this information can help the family think about how their relationship was and what memories they can keep maintaining a relationship once they are gone. We always talk to families about how important it is for family to be involved and to always talk to the patient even if they do not respond. Often, patients wait for their family to arrive so they can pass.
