McGee1 Leadership Essay Kelly McGee Department of Social Work, Chamberlain MSW514-11607: Human Behavior in The Social Environment II Dr. Aileen McCabe-Maucher March 2, 2024
McGee2 Introduction There have been many populations that have been discussed during this course. Many of the population discussed had to deal with many mental, environmental, physical, and emotional factors. The population that I will talk about is death and dying and how it effects many populations in different ways. Death and dying deals with many people not being able to cope with the fact that their loved one will not be there anymore. Many people fear the unknown and do not want to talk about it. Grief and loss are two key factors that many people struggle with. Most people do not know how to get back to normal life, after their loved one dies. Many people go through stages of grief. Elisabeth Kubler- Ross identified five stages of grief that people go through. Kessler (2019) stated, “denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance are the five stages of grief”. Most people go through similar emotions and have a hard time dealing with grief. As social workers, we are here to help patients and families overcome and deal with their emotions. It is okay with feeling grief and loss. Bereavement counseling is so important, especially when dealing with death and dying. Bereavement can help families understand their emotions and can talk to someone who you are safe with. In this paper will talk about death and dying and how society deals with it. Cultures In Western cultures, there's often a sense of mystery and dread when a person dies. The body is quickly picked up and taken to a morgue or funeral parlor, remaining out of sight of the grieving family until the wake or funeral, stated Bateman (2019). In Māori culture, when a person dies, they are shown for three days, and their soul is not laid to rest until the body is buried. In Hindu culture, the family keep vigil by the body, which is at their home. The body needs to be cremated withing 24 hours and spread to the sacred body of water. The Hindu
McGee3 mourning time last 10-30 days. In Islam, bodies need to be buried within a day. These are some examples of how culture can affect the way a body is put to rest. Every culture deal with death in different ways, but it is important to embrace everyone tradition and culture and try to make sure their needs are met. Anticipatory Grief Many people who face death or have family members who have gone through it. Have a hard time coping and often have a hard time going back to normal life. Complicated grief is grief that continues to be intense and pervasive, disrupting everyday life for longer than a year. Many people often describe it has feeling “stuck” in grief or “frozen in time” as of the death have just happened. According to Grief Wellness 2023, “more than 57% of Americans reported experiencing a major loss over the last three years. “In all 32% experience a family member loss, 20% experience a death of a pet, 3% expired the loss of a spouse and 2% expired a loss of a child”. Whatever the loss is, it affects people in many ways. There is not a right way to come, and it is important to realize everyone copes in their own way. Lightways Hospice Lightways hospice is a hospice agency in the community that provides palliative and hospice to humans of all ages. Lightways motto is, “through darkness we bring light”. Lightways is a non-profit agency that was founded in 1982 as Joliet Area Community Hospice. Lightways covers 11 counties and is expanding. Some goals they focus on are comfortability, education, compassion, grief support and high standard care. Everyone receives the same medical care, and it does not matter what their race, religion or gender is. Lightways receives funding through charities, donations, insurance and through the state. To qualify, you have to have a serious
McGee4 Illinois or terminal illness. Referral from a doctor is needed to be able to sign into hospice. Lightways uses the Illinois poverty level sliding scale to use for the inpatient units. There is no collections, late fees or nagging if a patient or family cannot afford care. Some programs that are provided is grief support, which is provided 13 months after passing. Music therapy, aromatherapy, massage theory, pet therapy, chaplain, social worker, and the medical staff are all the resources that are provided. Lightways provides a lot of services offered. However, not everyone would be interested in the services. Nickerson 2023 states, “ Conflict theories emphasize looking at the history and events in a society in terms of structural power divisions, such as social class”. Some conflicts that happen at hospice are cultural differences. Cultures play a huge part in hospice because, any cultures deal with death in different ways. In Western cultures, there's often a sense of mystery and dread when a person dies. The body is quickly picked up and taken to a morgue or funeral parlor, remaining out of sight of the grieving family until the wake or funeral, stated Bateman (2019). Every culture deal with death in different ways, but it is important to embrace everyone tradition and culture and try to make sure their needs are met. These provide a conflict at times, because hospice may not be able to provide the exact care, rituals, or way you would want your loved one to die. Participatory Leadership Framework
