Family Proclamation Research Project
Doctrine: Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness. Moreover, mortal life and the sanctity of the family is of the utmost importance to God’s eternal plan. Question: What is the Church’s stance on abortion and when is it acceptable?
Research
Church Newsroom. “Abortion.” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. “[t]he Church opposes elective abortion for personal or social convenience, and counsels its members not to submit to, perform, encourage, pay for, or arrange for such abortions.”
Nelson, Russell M. “Abortion: An Assault on the Defenseless. October 2008.
“This war called abortion is a war on the defenseless and the voiceless. It is a war on the unborn. This war is being waged globally.”
Andersen, Neil L. “The Personal Journey of a Child of God.” April 2021
“Abortion is an evil, stark and real and repugnant, which is sweeping over the earth. I plead with the women of this Church to shun it, to stand above it, to stay away from those compromising situations which make it appear desirable.”
Packer, Boyd K. “The Mystery of Life.” General Conference. October 1983.
“When one knows the doctrine, parenthood becomes a sacred obligation, the begetting of life a sacred privilege. Abortion would be unthinkable.”
Maxwell, Neal A. “The Women of God.” General Conference. April 1978
“I stand in admiration of women today who resist the fashion of abortion, by refusing to make the sacred womb a tomb!”
Nelson, Russell M. “Reverence for Life.” General Conference. April 1985
“Another contention raised is that a woman is free to choose what she does with her own body. To a certain extent this is true for all of us. We are free to think. We are free to plan. And then we are free to do. But once an action has been taken, we are never free from its consequences. Those
considering abortion have already exercised certain choices.”
Nelson, Russell M. “Protect the Spiritual Power Line.” General Conference 1984
“But as loud voices argue on, let us remember that those who advocate abortion have already been born! Those who freely deny God with their amoral and agnostic practices will one day find
that He may just as freely deny them!”
Kimball, Spencer W. “A Report and a Challenge.” General Conference. 1976
“Abortion, the taking of life, is one of the most grievous of sins. We have repeatedly affirmed the
position of the Church in unalterably opposing all abortions, except in two rare instances: When conception is the result of forcible rape and when competent medical counsel indicates that a mother’s health would otherwise be seriously jeopardized.”
Doctrine & Covenants Section 59:6
“Thou shalt not … kill, nor do anything like unto it”
Conclusion
Abortion has been a topic of debate since perhaps the beginning of humankind. The world is surrounded by voices and perspectives that are contrary to the position of the church (ie.
Chris Rock and his recent comedy tour: “Selective Outrage.”). It is clear that abortion is a form of murder and is a last resort - only under instances of rape and or incest, health of the mother, or
severe defects to the uterus/child could abortion be considered an acceptable option. Attempting to escape the realities of parenthood for convenience and to hide up sinful behavior is an abomination and not free of negative consequences – both eternally and temporarily. The church has discussed abortion with less frequency as the topic has become a more taboo on a political level, however with recent “outrage” from the supreme court’s overturning of
Roe V Wade, the church has further reaffirmed their stance on the matter. The Church Newsroom
hosts a published official statement that confirms this stance as “unchanging” and even encourages members who feel comfortable lobbying to prevent states from enacting change in favor of abortion. The church does not specify a time frame by which an abortion can be enacted without sinning. As soon as conception has happened, parenthood kicks in, a duty which must be taken with the utmost seriousness. The church recommends that if the family or single parent is unable to care for them, there are plenty of adoption agencies and other methods that prevent the child’s life from being taken before he/she even had a chance.
