“
History, 1838–1856, volume A-1 [23 December 1805–30 August 1834]” is a history of Joseph Smith written by
James Mulholland, Robert B. Thompson, William W. Phelps, and Willard Richards. This biographical manuscript contains the moment when Oliver and Joseph went into the nearby woods to pray about baptism since they found baptism in the translation of the plates on May 15th, 1829. The audience of this event was intended for Oliver and Joseph, who would years later write this experience down with the assistance of Mulholland and co. This
document was written sometime between 1839 and 1843 within the A-1 section of Joseph’s History. This was created for the preservation of the church’s history and the doctrine of priesthood. Keys were given to Joseph, so he was authorized to do the work of God in performing baptisms. God revealed his procedural pattern of priesthood ordinances and covenants to Joseph and Oliver through his servant angel, John. A timeless event like this is important to keep a record of. Joseph and Oliver’s prayer was followed by a visitation of an angel: John the Baptist. It’s important to ask these questions to contextualize and understand the eternal and essential moments of church history, not just through canonized scripture but also through historical documentation hand in hand. The revelation and ordinance John gave to these two men is what now is Doctrine and Covenants section 13. John conferred the Aaronic Priesthood on Joseph and Oliver and instructed them to baptize each other. John said in this confirmation that the keys he gave to these men were, “
the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; and this shall
never be taken again from the earth, until the sons of Levi do offer again an offering unto the Lord in h
righteousness.”
