Theology II, Online
Module 3 Reading Response
1.
In this module’s reading, Grudem discusses Jesus’ work on the cross (his
atonement) and also his resurrection and ascension.
In his discussion of atonement, Grudem talks about the “active” and
“passive” obedience of Jesus. In two well-written paragraphs, explain what
these two concepts mean and how this is played out in Jesus’ life and death.
2.
List and summarize the doctrinal significance of the resurrection.

For this module’s study, we are looking at the main affirmations that Christian
theology makes about the person and work of Jesus.
Section three of the “Cedarville Theological Reader” affirms some of the
essential elements in the study of Christ. For this response, read and reflect on
each of the passages included after the text of the statement.
For each of these passages, answer the following questions:
●
What is the basic meaning/point of the passage?
●
Which part of the statement does the passage support, affirm,
illustrate, or supplement?

Reflection:
Prov. 8:22-31
This passage gives an illustration of Christ and how He
was there in the beginning with God. Specifically, the
part where the author says “When he established the
Heavens, I was there;”. The heavens and the earth
was the very first thing that God created. Thus, since
Jesus was there before the first creation, we know that
He was there with God at the very beginning. This
passage illustrates how Christ is eternally begotten by
the Father.
Isa. 7:14
This prophecy from Isaiah supports that Jesus is the
Messiah. Knowing that this prophecy actually came
true, through the birth of Christ from the Virgin Mary,
adds to the supportive evidence that Jesus is the
Christ that the Israelites had been waiting on. This
passage supports the claim that Jesus was born of a
virgin.
Matt. 1:18-25
This passage shows us how Joseph was faithful to the
Lord by following His commands. This passage
supports the notion that Jesus was born of a virgin
through the spirit when the author states, “for that
which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will
bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he
will save his people from their sins.” All this took place
to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and
they shall call his name Immanuel’”
Luke 1:26-35
This passage describes how the angel Gabriel went to
Mary to tell her the news of the coming Christ. This text
directly illustrates the entire first sentence of the
Cedarville Theological reader. This passage illustrates
how Jesus would be born of a virgin through the Spirit,
and begotten by the Father.
John 1:14-18
This passage affirms that Jesus is the Word that
became flesh. John explicitly states “And the Word
became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have
seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father,
full of grace and truth.” The purpose of this passage is
to acknowledge that Jesus came to bring grace and
peace to us. To Moses was the law given, but to us
grace and peace because of Jesus Christ.
John 5:16-29
This passage is describing one of the interactions that
Jesus has with the Pharisees. In this interaction, Jesus
not only is performing works on the Sabbath, but He
also is claiming to be God’s son. This text supports the
idea that Jesus is eternally begotten by the Father and
that He shares the same divine will.
Phil. 2:6-11
This passage supplements the notion that Jesus is fully
God and fully man. We see this when the author states
“Who, though he was in the form of God, did not
count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but
emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant,
being born in the likeness of men.” In this statement,
we see that Christ left the form of God to be wrapped
in human flesh. Thus, taking on both manhood and
Godhood.
1 Tim. 2:5-6
This passage teaches us that because of Christ, we
have access to the Father. Without His perfect
sacrifice, man would be completely lost. This scripture
affirms that Christ is the mediator between man and
God.
Heb. 1:1-14
This passage discusses the difference between Christ
and the angels. It talks about His deity in comparison
to other heavenly beings. This passage supplements
the idea that Christ is eternally begotten by the Father

by stating “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth
in the beginning, and the heavens are the work
of your hands;” and “For to which of the angels did
God ever say, ‘You are my Son, today I have
begotten you’?”.
