Joshua thank you for sharing your view points on understanding the different genres of the Bible. You stated that it is important to read the scripture and use that to find answers in the different feelings and emotions we have in our daily lives. I think we should dig deeper than just the emotions and feelings aspect of our relationship with God and the Bible. I think we can use scripture to anchor us to Christ so that when we don’t feel him or sense him we still know the word and the truth of who he is. Hebrews 6:19 “This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.”(NLT) I do agree that learning the different genres will us in our daily living. For instance the Parables in the New Testament really give us the understanding that Gods kingdom is for everyone no matter our background or status. Matthew 13:47 is the Parable of the fishing Net. They catch fish of every kind. Then sort the bad fish from the good fish when they come to shore. This shows how the Kingdom of God is open to everyone and he will sort out a person from another person. Luis, I enjoyed reading your post, and thank you for sharing your view points. I agree with you when you said that a reader shouldn’t read a verse, take it out of context and apply to something else. “Don’t Neglect the Context” (Cartwright and Hulshof, Pg. 232) this is spot on to what we see all the time in church. Today, I was sitting in a church service trying to follow along and the pastor quoted seven verses and four were taken out of context to fit his narrative. The one that stood out the most to me was: “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints” (Eph 1:18). In this verse, Paul is praying for that. The pastor at church used the verse as a statement of fact to represent the enlightenment of God that is given to those that believe in him. What Paul is really emphasizing in this prayer is what God has already done and provided not what he can do or will do. The Pastor made it sound like we would inherit this as soon as you believed in God. This is disheartening as a witness because it can really inhibit spiritual growth and confuse new believers.
