Summarize: What are four distinguishing characteristics of “The Completely Literal Approach” to the Creation Account of Genesis? a. Genesis 1 as a historical narrative, meaning what happened was described. it is not an outline, and the details are meant to be taken seriously. b. Stance towards the modern scientific consensus, which is what scientists have come to an agreement about regarding scientific dating techniques, which in most cases, has a denialist and distrustful attitude towards modern science. c. Advocacy of mature creationism, which is based on the question of how old Adam was on the first sabbath because he looked like an adult, but in reality was only a day old. d. Theories to account for the fossil record, this is an issue to be resolved by mature creationism to be correct. two theories propose a solution, 1) the gap theory, which refers to the original beginning and the result of judgment. 2) the flood geology which states that the fossils are results of the Noahic flood. 1) Essentially Literal: The characteristics are interpreted literally and make dubious claims in an attempt to reconcile with both biblical and scientific data. 1
2) Essentially non-literal: readily accepts scientific theories without question and may pose a potential threat to religious beliefs. 2. List the four Divine principles in God’s Creation: a. Creation and the person of God: God is not a physical entity, but sometimes a figure of speech is used to describe God in human terms, which is known as an anthropomorphism. This is done to help understand God's senses and emotions better. Two of God's attributes can be highlighted through this figure of speech - his supremacy and omnipresence. b. Creation and the plan of God: The world follows a pattern of five components: announcement, command, report, evaluation, and temporal framework. This method is carefully planned with a firm hand behind it, as demonstrated by the creation of the six days in a climactic sequence pattern. Vertical and horizontal relationships are also evident Days 1-3 demonstrate the need for form on earth, and then days 4-6 address the need for filling emptiness. c. Creation and the power of God: One of the main themes in Genesis 1 is God's creative power through spoken words, accompanied by energy and strength. All of God's commands were executed without any difficulty, opposition, or strain, thus demonstrating His omnipotence. As God's creation, we must submit to His word. By doing so, we can attain peace. d. Creation and the people of God: This point indicates that God was intimately involved in all of creation, giving everything in the world a unique purpose and value. 3. What are the “two primary competitors that challenge the Genesis version of origins today?” a. Pantheism, which is the belief that God is everything. However, this contradicts the ideology that evil is an illusion. Pantheism attributes evil to God, whereas the Bible teaches that neither God nor matter are the source of evil. b. Materialism/naturalism, which is the belief that our thoughts and feelings come from the universe. According to this, all of God's creation comes from preexisting matter. 4. What are the three fundamental options with regard to origin confronting us today? a. Matter is eternal b. God is eternal c. Nothing is eternal 2
5. The revelation dealing with creation underscores what four attributes of God? a. The Old Testament portrays God as transcendent over the natural order. This means that He is above all and does not require anyone or anything since He is self-sufficient and exists independently. One of the ways in which this attribute is displayed is by referring to Him as the "Most High" and emphasizing His eternal nature. b. Another attribute of God is His immanence, which is the belief that His spirit dwells in all places. The book of Psalm 139 provides the best example of this attribute, emphasizing that we cannot escape God's spirit no matter where we go. c. The third attribute is God's sovereignty, which means that His promises and purposes stand forever. God's sovereignty is frequently illustrated in the Old Testament by saying that He is a King who reigns over His kingdom. Theologians tend to portray God as a lover and ignore His wrath and justice, which make a worldly moral government unattainable. d. The last attribute spoken about is His goodness, which is seen in creation. God's nearly perfect life support system for humans shows that He has our well-being at heart. In Him, we find everything we need, and His goodness is not only reserved for the righteous, but it is promised to them as well. 3
