Eternal Family
REL 200C
Unit 5: Video Study
Before Watching the Videos
Step 1:
Read the following paragraph from The Family Proclamation, and provide the information requested.
“Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "Children are an heritage of the Lord" (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.
“The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His
eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings
of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or
other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.”
If these two paragraphs are “the answers,” what are “the questions” the Lord’s apostles are answering?
1.
How should parents care for and raise their children?
2.
What is the divine purpose of the family and marriage?
3.
What principles should guide successful marriages and family life?
Step 2:
Answer the following questions.
1.
Considering that “
children are an heritage to the Lord
” (Psalms 127:3), identify at least two teachings in these paragraphs that might encourage married couples to have children?
Sacred Responsibility: The paragraph emphasizes that parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, which can be seen as an encouragement for married couples to have children and fulfill this divine duty.

Eternal Plan: It states that "Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan," which includes the birth and upbringing of children within the bonds of matrimony, encouraging couples to have children as part of this divine plan.
2.
“
Entitled
” is not a word commonly used by the Lord’s apostles. What happened in premortal life that could explain why that word/concept is appropriate in the context of children being raised by both their Mom and their Dad?
In the premortal life, we were all spirit children of Heavenly Parents who prepared a plan for us to come to earth and gain a physical body. Part of that plan included being born into families where we would be nurtured and taught by loving parents. The use of the word "entitled" underscores the idea that children have a divine right, established in the premortal existence, to be raised by both a mother and a father who honor their marital vows and provide a stable, loving environment.
3.
Which of the nine gospel principles in paragraph 7 have you seen personally make a positive difference in your family (or would have made that difference if it had been better applied)?
This is a personal reflection, but some common principles that often make a significant positive difference in families include: Faith: Strengthening faith in Jesus Christ can unify family members and provide a solid foundation during difficult times. Prayer: Regular family prayer can bring a sense of peace and unity, inviting the Spirit into the home. Forgiveness: Practicing forgiveness can heal relationships and foster a loving and supportive family environment. Love: Demonstrating love and compassion towards each other can create a nurturing and supportive family atmosphere.
