Directions: Define the following concept/themes/ideas listed below:
a.) Constantine – Emperor of Rome who stopped the persecution of Christians and in 324 made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire
b.) First Ecumenical Council – The first of many efforts to attain consensus in the church through an assembly representing all Christendom
c.) Nicene Creed – The defining statement of belief of Nicene or mainstream Christianity and in those Christian denominations that adhere to it
d.) Catacombs – Underground cemetery consisting of a subterranean gallery with recesses for tombs, as constructed by the ancient Romans
e.) Iconography – The visual images and symbols used in a work of art or the study or interpretation of these
f.) Fresco – A painting done rapidly in watercolor on wet plaster on a wall or ceiling, so that the colors penetrate the plaster and become fixed as it dries
g.) Basilica – A large oblong hall or building with double colonnades and a semicircular apse, used in ancient Rome as a court of law or for public assemblies
