Topic 3 DQ 1 CWV
Greetings class. Yes, the characterizations of human nature are accurate in the description of the
fall of human nature. God told Adam and Eve in Genesis 2:16–17 (ESV) "You may surely eat of
every tree in the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for
in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Diffey, 2022, pg. 96). After knowing that
Adam and Eve had ate of the tree when God instructed them not to do so, the serpent came along
and convinced Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Upon eating the forbidden fruit, Adam
and Eve eyes were opened to repercussions and sufferings that included pain during childbirth
and labor, they had to work, endure sickness, death, sin, and separation from God came upon
them. I am assured that the sufferings listed above are accurate because both Adam and Eve
knew that they were not supposed to eat the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden after being told
by God not to, and because they allowed the serpent to deceive them, they did so anyways being
disobedient and causing sin to come upon the world. So, the characterization of human nature is
accurate due to sin, and now every person must deal with the suffering and repercussions caused
by the disobedient act of Adam and Eve. I really like this question because it requires much
thought. Personally, the actions of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3 were both curiosity and
disobedience. I think that it was both curiosity and disobedience because humans were created to
be curious about the things in the world and they were curious as to why they could not eat the
fruit, and it was disobedience because both Adam and Eve knew that in Genesis 3:3 God had
strictly told them not to eat from that tree because they will die but being told not to made them
curious and they wanted to know what it was like to be like God, knowing good and evil (Diffey,
2022, pg. 96). Had both Adam and Eve not listened to the serpent and obeyed God we would not
have had to live in sin and be exposed to immoral actions. Diffey, D., & Holland, R. (Eds.). (2022).

I do agree that the characterizations of human nature are accurate, and you are correct, they are
still accurate today. Why? Because in the days of Adam and Eve, Eve endured painful
childbirth because she allowed the serpent to deceive her after God had already made it plain
that she and Adam could eat of any tree in the garden of Eden except for the tree of knowledge
of good and evil or they would surely die (King James Version Bible, 2007, Genesis 2:17).
Because Eve gave the fruit to Adam, he ate the fruit going against God as well. So, due to their
disobedience they both had to be held accountable for their actions (King James Version Bible,
2007, Genesis 3:16; 18-23). I would like to go back to where you said, “In Genesis chapter 3
the first emotion felt by Adam and Eve after eating the fruit is shame.” How do you think
Adam and Eve felt when they were cast out of the garden by God? It annoys me how we as
humans can put blame on others knowing we had a part in the matter, but the other involved
party forgets to take responsibility for the part they played. This is a good discussion and one
that will make you think deeper into the topic. Thank you for sharing your insight.
