REL 275C Outcomes
According to the Prophet Joseph Smith, “the title-page of the Book of Mormon is a literal translation, taken from the very last leaf, on the left hand side of the collection or book of plates,
which contained the record which has been translated, the language of the whole running the same as all Hebrew writing in general; and that said title page is not by any means a modern composition, either of mine or of any other man who has lived or does live in this generation” (History of the Church, 1:71).
REL 275C draws its outcomes from this important introduction to the Book of Mormon. Please read the title page below. Please note the highlighted phrases which serve as the foundation for the course outcomes.
As we begin this semester, please be aware of the following outcomes guiding this course as they are found in the title page to the Book of Mormon
:
Wherefore, it is an abridgment of the record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites—Written to the Lamanites, who are a remnant of the house of Israel; and also to Jew and Gentile—Written by way of commandment, and also by the spirit of prophecy and of revelation—Written and sealed up, and hid up unto the Lord, that they might not be destroyed—To come forth by the gift and power of God unto the interpretation thereof—Sealed by the hand of Moroni, and hid up unto the Lord, to come forth in due time by way of the Gentile—The interpretation thereof by the gift of God.
An abridgment taken from the Book of Ether also, which is a record of the people
of Jared, who were scattered at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people, when they were building a tower to get to heaven—
Which is to show unto the remnant of the house of Israel what great things the Lord hath done for their fathers (Outcome #1)
; and that they may know the covenants of the Lord (Outcome #2)
, that they are not cast off forever—And also to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ (Outcome #3)
, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations—And now, if there are faults they are the mistakes of men; wherefore, condemn not the things of God, that ye may be found spotless at the judgment-seat of Christ (Outcome #4)
.
For clarity, these outcomes have been formally stated in the syllabus as follows:
Identify
several “Great things” that the Lord has done for his children.
Explain
how the “covenants of the Lord” with the House of Israel make it so that “they are not cast off forever.”
Teach
why “Jesus is the Christ – the Eternal God.”
Understand
how to apply the Doctrine of Christ to “be found spotless at the judgment seat of Christ.”
Provide short reflections to the following questions:
1.
What are some great things the Lord has done for His children as taught in the Book of Mormon?
-provided for them
-countless blessings
-given revelation
2.
How does knowing of God’s power and love affect you?
It provides great comfort in my life and has really helped me get through some really tough times. 3.
How does it impact your desire to make and keep covenants?
God does so much for me and all He asks from me in return is to keep His commandments. I know that He personally knows me and is constantly aware of me and my needs. This creates a drive in me to try and please Him and give back to Him by obeying the commandments. 4.
What happens if we do not know the covenants of the Lord?
We will not be able to receive the blessings promised when covenants are made. 5.
What happens if we lack faith in the covenants of the Lord?
If we break our covenants, we are basically giving up the blessings we receive when we keep them. If our faith is lacking in our covenants, it would be helpful to pray to God for guidance, talk to your bishop, go back, and remember why you made the covenant in the first place and how you felt. 6.
Why is it so important to know that Jesus is the Christ?
There is so much comfort when you have a sure testimony of Christ. It makes life so much easier and provides you with more peace. Especially when you have sinned, Christ is waiting with open arms to take you back. 7.
How are covenants and the atonement of Jesus Christ related?
Making and keeping of covenants is necessary to receive all the blessings made available through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. 8.
What does the Book of Mormon teach us about what Jesus Christ was anointed to do for us?
That he was anointed to proclaim the salvation of our souls because of his sacrifice. 9.
How will making and keeping the covenants taught in the Book of Mormon, and coming unto Christ as taught in the Book of Mormon, prepare us for our judgement?
By keeping our covenants till we die, we will be able to access the power of the atonement of Jesus Christ at our judgement day and He will save us. 10. What was the most meaningful thing you learned from the discussion below on outcomes?
That God is so powerful, and He will always keep His promises whether they are old or new, He will always deliver. Having considered the questions 1-10, please read the following discussion of the outcomes for REL 275C:
The Title Page of the Book of Mormon states four primary purposes for the book. First, the Book of Mormon shows
“unto the remnant of the house of Israel what great things the Lord hath done
for their fathers.” Second, the record begun by Nephi and finished by Moroni makes
