Dr. Levy claims that self-stereotypes about getting older start to develop in childhood and persist throughout adulthood. She refutes the idea that adult growth has distinct characteristics and outcomes throughout her study. She challenges the idea that adult development has distinct characteristics and effects throughout her research. By the time someone reaches old age, the stereotypes about aging that they internalized as children have become self-stereotypes due to decades of reinforcement (Parker, 2016). Your perspective on aging is greatly influenced by how you observe others around you aging, and the cognitive functioning, behavior, and physical health of individuals may be impacted by this group of aging self-stereotypes (Parker, 2016). There are some actions we can take to stop the perpetuation of these stereotypes. We can research aging and the aging process as this might affect how we personally feel and possibly the opinions we have. Through research, we can discover and comprehend factors that affect an aging person's physical and mental health. A positive outlook on aging, adopting a healthier lifestyle, eating well, and exercising will help people feel happier overall. Interacting with our aging community can teach us how to lead better, healthier lives. These advantages can aid in eradicating these stereotypes. Gerontology has an exponentially increasing number of job openings. There are some tactics to entice experts into this developing, in-demand field. All age groups and professionals should think about studying gerontology because we are all getting older and living longer. By increasing awards and grants, some research institutions hope to attract professionals and students. Providing hands on courses and extra training classes for students so that by the time they are on the job they are somewhat seasoned to do some of the daily things in the field, having high-paying employment available after students graduate, along with emphasizing the benefits of geriatric research and enhancing everyone's capacity to treat the elderly could also aid in attracting. In terms of job options and services, there are some ways to retool for an aging America. The article claims that patterns are also changing when it comes to psychopathology in the United States. Compared to both the current and previous cohorts of older people, aging boomers report higher rates of mental illness (Parker, 2016). Students and professionals in psychology can make use of the interaction between physical, mental, and cognitive abilities of older people in this particular niche (Parker, 2016). Careers in gerontology will grow exponentially as the number of older adults increases. This will create job opportunities in a variety of gerontology-related fields, which will benefit both the patient and the caregiver. Offering gerontology courses, making financial aid, grants, and scholarships available to students from lower-income families are some strategies for retooling the country for an aging population in terms of job opportunities and support systems. After they graduate, give them the tools they'll need to find real jobs in the industry as I’ve previously mentioned. In my opinion, the programmatic theme of emotional intelligence and self-care is relevant to the idea of aging stereotypes as it is important to be able to understand another person's perspective and the circumstances they are facing. For those who are affected by these stereotypes, understanding and compassion can help launch the healing process. Under self-care, the way we present the elderly to the younger generation may have an impact on how they view themselves in the future. Changing this at a young age can have a significant impact on how children develop. What we can learn from the aging population is how to live a balanced life, both physically and emotionally, especially given that this population is expanding.
