PERSONALITY 1 PERSONALITY OF A FICTIONAL CHARACTER -RICK SANCHEZ Student’s name Institution Course Code: Course Name Instructor’s Name Date
PERSONALITY 2 Character Physical Description Rick Sanchez is a man in his sixties who lives in a multi-dimensional universe. Rick grew up in a normal middle-class family and he displayed an early inclination towards experimentation and innovation. Upon reaching adulthood, he married a woman by the name of Diane and had their daughter Beth. Rick later became a scientist, attempting to develop teleportation. Rick is recently divorced and widowed and currently lives with his daughter Beth Smith married to Jerry Smith and their family on Earth C-137. Rick has two grandchildren Summer Smith and Morty Smith. He operates a laboratory within the garage of the Smiths’ residence, where he often does research and development on his inventions and technological innovations. Rick does like being boredom and struggles to perform effectively in situations that involve routine duties. He likes going on adventures with Morty and Summer and frequently engages in interdimensional travel through the use of his portal gun or traverses various regions of the universe flying in his space van. He is a previous member of a rock band who often drinks and uses exotic drugs and is frequently spotted with saliva or vomit dripping from his mouth (Harmon & Roiland, 2013). Character Development Rick went through a traumatic past when his wife and daughter were murdered in another dimension by his alternate self. Since then, Rick has been trying to find his alternate self to execute revenge but without avail. Following this traumatic event, Rick has since taken up nihilistic and cynical traits, showing a profound skepticism towards authority. Rick also has unhealthy coping mechanisms that make him dependent on alcohol and frequently engages in aggressive behavior towards people within his social circle, including his family. He is self- centered, and arrogant, and lacks concern for the consequences of his behavior. These traits, together with his intelligence have remained stable over time making them homotypic traits
PERSONALITY 3 (Allen, 2020). There is evidence of heterotypic stability where Rick's personality has changed over time and undergoes significant development in various aspects (Allen, 2020). One is that he starts to be more open and deeper in showing emotion and sharing details regarding his difficult past. Rick also develops an increased level of accountability towards his family and those close to him. He takes risks so that he can keep them safe and he is emotionally invested in their welfare. This is especially evident in his association with Morty, who he starts to see as someone beyond a mere sidekick. Character Personality Assessment Using the Myer-Briggs MBTI test, Rick Sanchez is an ENTP (Extraversion, Intuition, Thinking, and Prospecting) but with unhealthy behavior. Individuals with this trait exhibit great creativity and boldness and possess unique intellectual dexterity. They are not afraid to challenge the status quo and are usually rational (NERIS Analytics Limited, 2013). Rick’s intelligence however causes him to view the rest of the world as too simplistic and is therefore unable to listen to anyone else. He tends to criticize and often argues with others. ENTPs who exhibit unhealthy behavior may display a lack of concern for the effects of their actions on those around them. Their behavior may be perceived as lacking empathy and concern (NERIS Analytics Limited, 2013). Rick is insensitive and employs rationalization as a defense mechanism to justify his actions. Adding Perspective The psychodynamic theory states that human behavior is shaped by unconscious motivations and conflicts. The unconscious psychological forces have the potential to materialize in a person's behavior, emotional experiences, and interpersonal connections (McLeod, 2020). Rick's personality is underpinned by a profound sense of pain and trauma, which he attempts to

PERSONALITY 4 suppress and evade through his indulgence in alcohol and his nihilistic perspective on life. According to psychodynamic theory, it can be inferred that the source of this pain can be traced back to experiences during his youth when he lost his family. Another component of Rick's character is his ego which is a component of an individual's personality that operates at a conscious level and serves as a mediator between the external environment and the unconscious mind. Rick's ego is distinguished by his intelligence, creativity, and his ability to solve issues. His ego is however also marked in the way he dismisses those he considers less intelligent than him and his constant need to control. Personality Disorder Based on Rick's manner of interaction with himself, those close to him, and his environment, he meets three potential criteria indicative of antisocial personality disorder. The condition is distinguished by a disregard for the feelings of others and an absence of empathy. Individuals diagnosed with this disorder exhibit impulsive and reckless behavior and display a lack of remorse for their actions. They also display deceitfulness (mayo clinic, 2019). Rick's behavior displays certain characteristics, such as self-centeredness, manipulation, and an impulse for engaging in risky behaviors without considering the potential outcomes. He lacks empathy towards others, such as when he left his family in an alternate dimension and he also mistreats Morty. He often lies to and manipulates those close to him. Clarity and Cohesion Rick is a man who has faced a traumatic past which is the loss of his family and is an alcoholic. His behavior is indicative of antisocial personality disorder. He is an intelligent scientist that has a nihilistic view on life traits that are homotypic to his personality His character changes over time and becomes more emotionally responsible for his family, a heterotypic trait.
