Gender nonconformity and Transgender In a video titled "understanding Gender Nonconformity," gender therapist Darlene Tando states (Doctor, 2013). Gender nonconforming and gender identity are related, despite the fact that they are referred to differently and are used interchangeably (Admin, 2015). The expectations of what boys and girls should do or like do not apply to young people who identify as gender nonconforming. Conversely, the term "transgender" describes a person whose identification of male or female in their brain does not necessarily match their biological sex. This idea explains why an adolescent could adhere to his natal sex, be sexually attracted to the opposite sex, or reject what society recognizes as a boy or girl. For example, when a boy buys his biological sex, he rejects everything that goes along with it, such as dressed like a boy, playing with toys intended for boys, and—above all—taking offense when he is referred to by feminine pronouns like she/her, how will you as an educator help adolescents grow up with healthy self-esteem and confidence? Adolescence is the most difficult and significant time in a child's life since it is a time of many physical and developmental changes that will affect the person they become for the rest of their lives. They will identify with and remain what they are right now for the rest of their lives. The University of Michigan Health (2021) states that gender identity can begin to form as early as age three. The American Psychological Association (n.d.) cites APA (2011). The concept of "gender identity" describes a person as either male, female, or of a different gender. I was raised in Africa; thus I was not aware that transgender people existed. There is little mention of transgender people in our culture because, if there are any, I think they are compelled to conform to social standards and expectations rather than being allowed to be themselves. Even in countries where transgender individuals are the norm, some segments of society still find it disturbing and find it difficult to understand and accept transgender persons as regular people. As to University of Michigan Health (n.d.), transgender individuals identify as gender nonconforming with the sex given to them at birth. This is in line with Bird in TED (2017) idea, which states that being transgender simply implies that a person's gender at birth does not match their true identity. I believe that society still finds it difficult to accept transgender individuals, with a few notable exemptions since they are unaware that they are just regular people. They still have difficulty blending in with society and staying out of the spotlight. Gender non-conformity, according to the Doctors (2013) video, is the act of challenging societal expectations that one should be a girl or a male. Although nonconformity individuals themselves are not transgender, transgender children are. According to the American Psychological Association (n.d.), the term "gender non-conforming" describes individuals whose gender expression, identity, or roles differ from gender norms associated with their assigned birth sex. The act of switching some gender roles without altering one's identity is known as gender conformity. There are two kinds of employees: a boy who is viewed as a boy and a girl who enjoys working with boys. According to Fournier (2021), social perceptions or standards of male or female identity are the root cause of gender conformity. When men are prevented from expressing their gentle and nurturing nature because they are considered as being too feminine, gender standards can be harmful and repressive. Nonetheless, a girl might be considered
a tomboy even if she is athletic and stoic. When boys and girls wear the same clothes, they are often teased, harassed, and sometimes even refused entry to the bathrooms. Fournier (2021) continues, "It is impossible to live up to every gender norm in our culture because everyone exhibits some nonconforming behavior in their daily lives and gender expression." In conclusion, more education is required on gender-related issues (roles and identity). Every culture views mean girls from essentially the same standpoint, which is the norm. People are astonished and find it difficult to accept when someone turns out to be different. This explains why most GLB people—transgender, gay, lesbian, or bisexual-find it difficult to blend in with society. Above all, they do belong to a society of their own that they connect with; it's as though they are human beings without a place in society. Although there will be some shame associated with being nonconformist, it is preferable than the previous. According to Rosario (2006), although GLBs go through several stages in their sexual identity development and evolution, they are not different from their younger selves. Bird in TED (2017) says being transgender is awkward in the sense because everyone around you gets awkward, they forget that they are also working with people, therefore they are hesitant to make general inquiries or say the wrong thing. Doctors (2013) advise parents to love and accept their children for who they are. Some groups offer support to families that are having a hard time accepting these situations. As educators, it is our responsibility to remain impartial. It is better for us to suppress our feelings and thoughts and ignore cultural norms in order to tragically absorb such youngsters and provide them a sense of safety, belonging, and love. How can we establish a welcoming and safe atmosphere for adolescents of all gender identities? How can we promote awareness of gender identity issues in the school and society at large?
