Using Critical Thinking to Overcome Cognitive Biases Introduction In this essay, I will explore the cognitive bias discussed in this week's lesson and demonstrate how critical thinking strategies can help identify and mitigate such biases. Additionally, I will provide an example of how understanding cognitive bias and employing critical thinking can contribute to success in personal, professional, or academic life. In our complex world, individuals can be influenced by their reasoning and judgments if they allow biases to dominate their thoughts and perspectives. Through my studies in psychological sciences, I have learned that psychology, as a mental health discipline focused on the human mind, requires practitioners to be aware of and address biases. As a psychologist or counselor, it is essential to recognize and manage biases to better understand and help others. Sometimes, this means setting aside one's own feelings and thoughts to empathize with another person's experience. Personal Experience with Cognitive Biases My experience with cognitive biases, such as confirmation bias, ostrich bias, and egocentrism, highlights my tendency toward egocentric thinking. I have a strong sense of self and often feel the need for validation to feel successful. While I strive to maintain a positive outlook, I am aware that unchecked negativity can be detrimental. Despite this self-awareness, I often receive feedback that my ego can interfere with my interactions with others. Early in my career at Dicks Sporting Goods, my manager frequently suggested changes to my displays, which initially frustrated me. Over time, I realized that constructive criticism was essential for my growth and development. This experience taught me the value of receiving feedback and the importance of adapting my approach. Reading "Thinking Like a Psychological Scientist" helped me understand that thoughts are influenced by emotions. As a psychologist, my focus should be on helping my clients, whether they are dealing with mental health issues or simply need someone to talk to. It is crucial to listen actively and empathetically rather than imposing my own thoughts and feelings on the situation. Developing the ability to evaluate and contrast different perspectives is essential in any context where listening is more important than speaking. Critical Thinking Strategies To address and reduce confirmation bias, I could use critical thinking strategies from the Paul and Elder Learning Resource and the Noba Project article. One effective strategy from the Noba Project is "considering the alternatives." This approach encourages actively seeking out information and viewpoints that challenge my existing beliefs or theories, helping to counter the
tendency to focus only on supporting evidence. Additionally, the Paul and Elder Learning Resource emphasizes the intellectual standard of "clarity." By carefully evaluating the logic of my arguments and the evidence I encounter, I can avoid misinterpreting information to fit my preconceptions. Example of Contribution to Success Applying critical thinking strategies and recognizing cognitive biases are crucial for success in various aspects of life. In my professional role at Dicks Sporting Goods, being aware of confirmation bias helps me make more objective and informed decisions, leading to better project outcomes and higher stakeholder satisfaction. In my academic pursuits, understanding cognitive biases ensures that I critically evaluate sources and arguments, resulting in more rigorous and credible research. Conclusion In conclusion, confirmation bias is a prevalent cognitive bias that influences belief formation and decision-making. By employing critical thinking strategies such as considering alternatives and evaluating clarity, individuals can mitigate the effects of confirmation bias and make more impartial and informed decisions. Awareness of cognitive biases and the application of critical thinking are invaluable skills that contribute to success in academic, professional, and personal endeavors.
